Northbound before first light in the morning. Headed to the Ogallala/Keystone area for a muley. My brother is supposed to go too, but he let his oldest sleep over at a friends house last weekend and the mom has tested positive. He's in the process of getting everyone tested. No one is showing any symptoms but my mom was going to watch the boys in between school next week while we were gone. She's going to flip out and we are both fairly sure she will back out. Either way, I'm going with or without him.

SUCCESS!!

Headed out at first light this morning and went to a pivot with alfalfa. Pulled up and started glassing. Spotted a good buck and put on a stalk. Got to where he should have been and he disappeared. We hunted hard all morning and only saw a few more small bucks. We got word that my cousin’s son connected, so we went back to the house to grab a sandwich help him out. He tried all day yesterday to connect on some real big deer, but couldn’t get it done. He got a really nice first mule deer.

After eating lunch and a power nap, we headed back out. After a short drive, we spotted a decent buck about 500+ yards out. After a short stalk, we decided he wasn’t what we were after. We got back in the truck and made a u-turn back from where we came. When we got back to the road, there was about 15 deer in a group of trees not 20 yards from where we started. We started glassing and there was a very nice buck. I jumped out of the truck and only had to manage about a 100 yard shot. We aged him at 6+.

We got mine field dressed and decided there was enough daylight left to try and get my brother a deer. We headed to another alfalfa patch thinking the deer would be coming out of the hill to graze. We turned a corner and could see some deer about 1000 yards out. We decided there was a shooter buck and started inching closer. We topped a ridge to get a better look. We were all focused on the initial buck, we didn’t see the giant below him. We finally saw him and we were able to use a windmill to get closer. We ranged him at 303 and my brother smoked him with my late dad’s 7 mag. We guess this deer will go 180+. He’s an absolute beast and a deer of a lifetime.

Thanks!! Trip to remember for sure. This is private land owned by a cousin of mine. DIY at its best.
