It's an Eastern Hognose snake. What part of Texas was it found?

Burleson (Fort Worth).

I wish people wouldn’t kill snakes out of ignorance.

Yep. I don't get the crowd that kills every snake. I would rather have non-venomous snakes around the house than rodents any day!

Yep, hog nose are good snakes, however the scale pattern can cause most folks hearts to skip a beat or two If seen in the grass. I don't have that problem but I have seen more than one "tough guy" panic at a brown water snake .

And then it doesn't help that they often will spread out their necks, flatten their head and HISS! Big show, bigger bluff. Perfectly harmless snake.

This one put on a big show for me:

People not familiar with them either run or kill them on the spot.

They are one snake that have incredible diversity in pattern and color. But all are harmless.

I have kept several wild caught eastern hognoses as pets over the years. Their favorite food are toads. They will eat frogs and can be groomed to eat baby mice (pinkies) by hand. One of the most interesting North American snakes.
