I was traveling back home from the ranch on HWY 281 between Stephenville and HWY 20 and narrowly avoided a serious crash. There is an alternating passing lane on that stretch and as I was passing another vehicle I noticed the car coming toward me wasn't looking at the road (most likely looking at the phone). As the car approached it started traveling into my lane as I was passing. Luckily the person driving the truck next to me saw what was happening and was able to veer off the road just enough for me to get over and narrowly avoid the crash. As you know a head on collision at 70mph would have been no bueno.

I was so pissed and scared at the same time that I had to pull over to gather myself.

Be careful guys and don't be the a$$ using your phone while driving.

That’s scary. A couple of times in my life I’ve narrowly avoided an accident and it can for sure shake you up. Glad it turned out okay.

Glad to hear your okay, and agree wholeheartedly. My son had the same thing happen. Driving to Pilot Point, when another vehicle swerved into his lane. Clipped the driver door, and the driver mirror snapped and hit him in the face. (He had the window down) Like you, he sat in the ditch for a good 20 minutes, spitting blood and glass out of his mouth.

Other vehicle never stopped.

all texting should disable any time a phone is moving more than 5 mph.

How are they going to know if it's a passenger or a driver?

All new cars connect to your phone for handsfree, maps, music, etc. If it's connected it can and should disable the screen use on the phone. This would allow passengers to still utilized their phones. Would not be a perfect solution as not everyone connects to their car and there are still a lot of older cars on the road. To back that up we should enforce cell phone laws already on the books with extreme prejudice.

I understand this and am well aware, but that's not was said.

A lady killed a couple of kids while texting on that same stretch of road a year or two ago.

What is it about that stretch of road? I've had more near misses on 281 north of Stephenville than I can count. I USED to sometimes take that route to and from our place in central Texas and it is crazy. This spring I was sitting at the light at 281 and Lingleville Road and when it turned green for me, I started to go, but noticed a southbound truck was not slowing. I stopped and he blew through the intersection. I started to go again, and a sedan did the same thing. Not one near miss, but two within seconds.

Once, just north of town, a pickup pulling a stock trailer merged into my lane narrowing missing me, then he traveled all of the way into oncoming traffic before swerving back. I thought for sure he was going head on into someone, so I slowed way down to avoid the aftermath. Fortunately he realized and was able to get back across before killing someone.

Will add, on one of the hills either just before Natty Flats or just after, I invariably see cars coming down the hill heading south well across the center line and FLYING.

Like I say, I USED to take that route regularly, but now I just take 16 up. A lot less traffic and a lot fewer idiots.

Dalroo - The funny thing is I always take Hwy 16. I have no idea why I decided to take that route. Will be my last though

Been in a near head on collision at 70 mph on 31 just east of Chandler. It will mess with your head for a long time. I still hate driving on 2 lane roads.

I am glad to see many of the smaller highways get real medians and expanded to 4 lanes.

I wish they would do the same with Loop 49 in Tyler. It seems like every couple of weeks there is another death.

I take 16 probably 90% of the time, but every once in a while it is nice to change scenery. Now when I want to deviate for a change, I take 183 up to Cisco, or if I am not in a hurry and really want a change, I take FM roads over to Goldthwaite, then up to Hamilton, Hico, and Glen Rose. Takes a bit longer to get back to FW, but can grab a slice of pie at the Coffee Cup!

I've done a lot of stupid things in my life but never anything as stupid as using my cep phone while driving.

Nobody tried to kill me, but I was in DFW traffic the last 2 days. I saw some breathtakingly bad and risky driving, and at very high speeds. Maybe my being out of fast heavy traffic for 10 years has made me rusty and tentative.

I was doing about 80 heading south out of Dallas this afternoon and got passed by a milk truck. I was ashamed. A milk truck for heaven sake. I could lose my man card.

Driving in DFW is definitely an experience. Sometimes I think people think 75 is the suggested starting speed limit. I'm a really observant driver and I can't count the times I would have been in an accident if I wasn't looking out for other peoples mistakes. I'm teaching my kids to drive and I'm terrified to put them on the highways. I think we're going to have a rule for a few years of no leaving Allen or driving on the highway without me or my wife.

I take 183 when I need to have some sausage made. Full Draw in Rising Star does a mighty fine job on smoked sausage.

I nearly took a 20’ bobtail truck in the face today halfway between Wingate and Sweetwater. The guy swerved to avoid a 3’ long piece of truck tread that had peeled and was in his lane.

I've nearly gotten hit a few times, following pedestrian laws, crossing the street to get to work/school around here.

The amount of people that operate a metal death trap with their face in their phone is mind boggling.

I lost my wife of nearly 15 years on June 17, 2014 to a texting driver. It has very real consequences.

Westtexaswatkins,

Man, you brought a tear to my eye. She was a lovely woman. I don't have the words.

You did what?
