Had some luck.

Nice mature buck from a friend’s ranch.

7.5+ year old, just over 200#, 161”, 18” spread.

A nice classic South Texas deer from the area north of Laredo known as The Golden Triangle.

The deer in this semi-desert area on the west side of South Texas supposedly are a different subspecies than other areas of Texas. G2’s shorter than G3’s are very characteristic of this area.

Montana Rifle Company .308 with a 130 gr Barnes TTSX to the forward point of the shoulder dropped him where he stood.

Unfortunately not a great photo. 😖

Here is a game camera photo. Both beams were over 25” with in the inward and upward curl.

Both G3’s are 10 6/8” for scale.

I thought it would be 150”’s, but the beams and G4’s nudged it up.

I’ll have someone else check it, but always happy chasing the old bucks regardless. I don’t get to wrapped around the axle about numbers.

Second pic tells a different story. Easily over 160. Beautiful. My kinda deer. Congrats. Was the 200# live or field dressed?

203# live weight, which is on the low side for bucks in that area. So he might be even older. I usually hunt on a ranch nearby and live weights run 225 - 245 on average.

If the man who has a dead deer in his hands says its 160 then why would you question him?

Anyway congrats on an awesome trophy

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I see some posted that seem off by 20” or more and raise an eyebrow now and then, but let it go.

I guesstimated him in the 150”’s in person and I am usually a touch low. The beams turning in and up came in longer than my eyeball estimate. I am certain that it is solid in the 150’s. My friend has quite a few in the B&C book off this ranch. They did the measuring and they seem pretty careful with measuring for their records. Cost me nothing other than helping them with the ranch, so it is not like they are making money selling me deer by the inch. Maybe they stretched it??

Whether it is 155” or 160” is not a difference that matters to me, but I will pick up the rack and have it checked. It is an old mature native deer not from a pen. I had a good time hunting with friends on their place. I made a good shot that dropped it where it stood. Those are what matter the most to me.

Great buck and congrats. I can see him scoring 160 with 102 to 104 on the down frame and 56-58 on tines from what I can see in those pics. Very symmetrical buck also which is rare to see nowadays. He has that classic South Texas 10 point frame with short G2s and longer 3s and 4s also. cheers

No apology needed Titan, but thank you to all. 😊

Thanks for the feedback STXR, your eye and opinion is about as accurate as any tape measure made. 😊👍

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
