We have wintering eagles in the area and I've seen them on dead cows and their nests. So it's not unusual to see them. Well, yesterday the wife said she thought she saw one the day before on the hog I'd just shot. I thought she had probably seen some caracara feeding with the buzzards. They're in the area now and will feed together. Then I saw all the buzzards take off like they'd been spooked. I thought it might be a dog or coyote so went to have a look.

Hmm, Might be an eagle. The buzzards would swoop down and try to intimidate the eagle but he kept right on eating. I didn't want to spook it so I tried to get some cell phone pictures at an estimated 150 or so yards. I don't see any black on the head like a caracara and the wings were pure white when it flew off. I can see it from the front deck so I'll try to get a picture through the spotting scope if it comes back today without disturbing it. That would be the third day seeing it if it comes today. Probably not much left of that hog.

Where I hunt in North OK, we have a few resident Bald Eagles. I see them quite often on our gut piles.

Well, they are common scavengers.

Ive only seen a few from a great distance so dont have much personal experience with them. Know several people who have taken trips to alaska and they all come home saying that up there bald eagles are viewed similarly to vultures instead of majestic hunters.

Is it an eagle? I have seen that kara karas and buzzards do not always mix well.

3 red-tails were chowing down on a big boar coon I dumped the other day. One wouldn't fly very far away at all when I drove by twice. I guess with all the buzzards and caracaras around, he/she wasn't going to take a chance.

When I lived in Tulsa we had a pair that would always catch fish out of our lake and eat them on the dock. They are way bigger than most people realize, I had no idea they were that big so I bet they could do some serious damage to a dead pig carcass.

I have a fair collection of pics of eagles feasting on hogs. It is common.

I have seen them on road kill deer and gut piles. On a goose hunt a goose glide off about 1/4 mile one morning and an eagle cleaned the breast meat off before the hunter that went after it got there.

This one beat the buzzards to the hog I had shot overnight. He defended the carcass until so many showed up they finally pushed him off. This was in Van Zandt County.

We have tons of them up here in AK. For our nations bird, it is pretty sad to see a bunch of them picking through garbage at the dump. Yeah, they will eat anything.

Man that looked like looking through my spotting scope. Yeah, I guess they finally pushed him away. I set up to get some better pics if he comes back. The mrs told me to get another one for him. Right away dear.

Shot some more fresh meat for the birds last night. Looking back up the hill to my hide. 275 yards is pushing the Blackout. I'm not seeing exit wounds at this range.

It hasn't been common, but I've seen bald eagles feasting on the pieces of hogs I'd shot and left for scavengers.

1.
2.

I had a bald eagle fly right next to my stand on Saturday. Was an amazing sight and I questioned if it was what I thought it was. Doesn't apply to the pig eating, but you guys put some faith back in my eyes

I too have seen some on my hog kills. I live near the river and see Eagles several times a year.

Good reason to avoid warfarin or other toxicant hog control measures that could have potential secondary kills.
