I am looking at getting a 6.5 Creedmoor in a Semi Auto platform but I see that they are only in the AR-10. I hear that the AR-10 is much heavier then the AR-15.

Here are my concerns:
Is the weight that big of an issue?
Should I be looking at different caliber? 5.56? .308?
Which platform is less likely to jam after firing?

My main use for this gun is for long range shooting for fun and enough force to put a hog down.

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at the Larue UU KIt. Great value but lead times can be lengthy. Black Friday is just around the corner and they are known for some killer deals.

Good shooting with quality bullets kills hogs, not caliber. Yes, the AR10 is much heavier and bulkier than the AR15. Most opt for an AR15 in 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC for dedicated hog hunting, but the .300 BO is also reasonably popular. Personally, I use conventional night vision, and .308 recoil is too strong for my scopes, so I use either a .300 BO or a .224 Valkyrie. That said, I have and like my AR10 ... but there's no doubt that it's much heavier especially with NV gear, illuminators, suppressors, etc. From your description which includes both long range targets and hogs, it sounds like 6.5 Grendel might be a good fit.

I'd also look at the 6mm ARC. More energy than a Grendel but still in the lighter 15 platform. I would suggest building a lightweight AR10 but you can't really do lightweight if you're going to be shooting strings at long range (IMO).

They're heavier but it's not as bad as people want to make it seem. I really like the ar10....

Define what you mean by long range and also how far out you plan on shooting hogs. The Grendel can reach out to 1200 yards for targets but probably not much on hogs past 500ish.

Here are my concerns:
Is the weight that big of an issue? Are up walking around or sitting in a blind? Fully dressed weight is probably between 10-15lbs depending on stock, rail, optic mounts, optics, barrel length/profile, mag capacity, sling, etc..
Should I be looking at different caliber? 5.56? .308? If you want an AR10 for long range pigs a .308,6.5CM, 260, 7-08, etc.. would be fine choices
Which platform is less likely to jam after firing? Bolt Gun is obviously more reliable. ARs can be temperamental. Once you get it "tuned" you will be happy you went with a semi for pigs.

My main use for this gun is for long range shooting for fun and enough force to put a hog down. A 6.5CM in an AR10 platform would work great.

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

The weight is only an issue if you plan to carry it around a lot, stalking hogs or whatnot. Mobility and long range usually are not done at the same time. Long range rifles are typically bolt guns but it is definitely not the rule. I consider LR 400+. The 308 you mentioned is also AR10. 6.5 Grendel. 6.8 SPC, and new 6ARC will kill hogs deader than the 556 mentioned and from an AR15. If you want semi, LR, and light, Grendel or 6ARC. That's a compromise though.

IF you go with an AR-10

Get a JP Enhanced and High Pressure bolt

An adjustable gas block and a JP polished spring

These three components themselves will carry you far in terms of reliable function.

Get a complete upper from Wilson Combat with a 16" barrel and build your own lower.......Aero Precision would be a good resource for the lower.....I have this set up and it is not heavy......

What do you consider long range? How far out do you want too be able to kill a hog?

The primary use for the rifle is long range shooting. I wouldn't consider the Ham'r long range.

Thanks for all of the great feed back and help. The range I am talking about is 500-600 yds as that is the longest distance I have at shooting coyotes and other pests. I will not throw lead at hogs at that distance but want to be able to also take a few extra shots at the sounders when I am walking up on them in the field.

I think 224 Valkyrie with 80 grain ELDMs would work as would the 6.5 Grendel and the newer 6mm ARC in an AR15 platform.
