And for overkill, no 7MM Rem. Mag or 300 Win Mag?

Either a 7mm-08 or .458 SOCOM, just depends on where I decide to hunt and the prospects of having hogs show up.

And for overkill, no 7MM Rem. Mag or 300 Win Mag? I'll take the hit for omitting the 30-06 but not so much any others.

What the author of my list had to say about the 30-06...
Get out your pitchforks, but don't bother perusing this list again because you still won't find the .30-06. I love this old, proven slayer of game, but a perfect whitetail cartridge it is not. Its long action isn't easily made in compact rifles built for treestands. Its bullet’s energy, while impressive, is more than what’s needed for deer, and it comes with the cost of added recoil. Sadly, it's just not sexy anymore. Everyone knows the .30-06 works wonderfully on all game, but I’m sacrificing it in order to inform readers of other cartridges that are better suited for deer.

Wife's been carrying the same 30-06 for 45 years. 28 shots and 28 bucks on the ground including mule deer, white tail, antelope. I carried one for 43 years. And don't try to inform me of a better cartridge for deer than the 30-06, cause there is not one. Better for you maybe, but not better for killing big bucks.

No .280, no 6mm, no .223....at least they thought enough of my .270 to include it...but I am going to be in a bowblind with my bow on Saturday just like I have been all month.

I use my Sako A7 in 300wsm. It has taken everything from grouse to cow bison. 165-168 gr bonded bullets. Grouse was a head shot.

I'll carry a 30.06 in December. My Parker Thunderhawk and PSE Vulcan(old one) have filled all but 1 tag.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

"The 30-06 is never a mistake." Col. Townsend Whelen It could have been worse. I could have omitted the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I will more than likely carry my Winchester XPR in 325 WSM. Bought it last year, haven't shot it much. Gunsmith buddy did a trigger job for me, I've had it to the range twice and it's a shooter.
I'm hung up on WSM's. I have a Browning BLR in 300 WSM that shots really good, crappy trigger but good shooter.
I really like the XPR's, dang accurate for the money. I think I will buy a 270 WSM too.
In past years I carried my old pieced together 257 Weatherby Mag. Years ago I bought a Interarms MarkX Mauser in 7 mag. Gunsmith buddy of mine had a take off 25 cal (25/06) Hart Barrel from a guy that didnt like the way it shot, only had a few round ran throught. My gunsmith buddy rethreaded and reamed it for 257 Wby. It dang near shoots a ragged hole.
Could talk about my old 270 Win too, but better get back to work. I can talk about guns till the cow come home, bet I'm not the only one on here that likes to talk about guns!!!
Thanks, Billy

I agree that the old 06 is the best all round cartridge, but i will be carrying my old reliable 270. I call it Thor's hammer, and I know when I squeeze that trigger, the bullet is going where I am aiming.
