I need some help in determining the tongue weight of a trailer loaded with a SxS. I THINK I have an idea but would appreciate ideas but please don't say use a bathroom scale under the trailer jack. That idea went by the wayside early this morning. Thanks Daniel

You can do it with a bathroom scale and a board/pipe etc. Youtube will show you better than i could explain it with words.

They sell hitches with a scale built into them that will tell you what the tongue weight is.

You can go to a cat scale or similar at a truck stop etc.

Bathroom scale sitting on a cinder block so it's about same height as hitch.
As you load the trailer you can balance the load where it needs to be.

Tongue weight is much more important on frame mounted hitches VS hitches mounted on the rear axle.
Hitches mounted on frame depend on springs, shocks and tires to carry load and the vehicle tends to wallow when overloaded.
Hitches mounted on axle only depend on tires to carry load and generally will carry heavier load more safely.

Take your truck to the truck stop. Get a weight of the truck by itself. Hook your trailer up, and get a weight of the whole rig, making sure that the truck and trailer are on separate weight pads. It will give you the weight on your trailer axle, and the additional weight that your truck is now showing will be the tongue weight.

I came here to say this but you beat me to it, this is how you do it. Scale tickets are like $12 at the truckstop

Thanks Guys, that is what I did after I realized there is a set of public scales about 6 miles from my house.

For regular sized 1/2 ton and smaller trucks, measure the height of your bumper from the ground with no trailer.
Put your trailer on and load the SXS and move it back and forth until the bumper drops 1-1/2" to 2", then you know you have a positive load on the bumper.

A 1ton dually is much more forgiving pulling 3K than a 68 Datsun 1600.
If your truck tends to wander going down the highway (tail wagging the dog) you have SXS loaded to far to the back.
After you find the sweet spot, bolt a wheel chock to trailer bed in front of front wheel so you can quickly load it in same place each time.
You can also just shoot a stripe on trailer with rattlecan if you use trailer to haul other stuff and don't want the chock on floor.
You just need a reference so you can load it quickly after you figure out the balance point.

This^
a 200lb man will drop a bumper approx. 2 ". If you are near that weight measure it yourself, then measure it with the trailer hooked up. Cheap and easy.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.
