Little background...
Looking at getting a new setup, and would appreciate any advice/comments from the THF braintrust. Been deer hunting my whole life, roughly 24 years...i'm currently 34. I've always used base level rifles in 243 & 273 from remington and savage, with what i always considered mid/low level optics like Monarch Prostaff & Buckmaster. Got the job done, but want to upgrade.

Looking at a new setup, and strongly considering a 7mm-08 from Bergara. What would be your suggestions in choice of scope in the $700 - $1000 price range. Would be used almost 100% for whitetail in Texas with expectations to pass down to my son.

Leupold VX5-HD, 3-15x44. I have one, my favorite all time hunting scope. Has performed perfectly for three pretty rough years so far. Light gathering will get you in trouble if you're not careful, it's that good.

That VX5 looks like a helluva hunting scope. I haven't looked through one, but the burris veracity seems like a good option around $500.

There's one for sale in classified section, worth a look.

They all look good inside the store. The VX5-HD is great that last 2 minutes of legal shooting light, and even a little later. (for pigs of course). I've had deer at 100 yards, and couldn't put horns on 'em. Through this scope you can count their points and make a judgement on the rack.

Good choice. I have the CDS dials on three Leupolds. Once you settle on ammo, they're great and have worked well for me.

I had the same question as the OP and found this thread to be very helpful. Picked up a VX5HD 3-15 CDS with fire dot today.
