Just returned from Venice after chasing tuna for two days. We went out day one about 45 miles and trailed shrimp boats in rough water. Fish were bigger but fewer. we caught a 120lbs and a 160lbs along with several black fin, Bonita, and a couple dusky sharks..
Day two, we ran 85 miles out where there were higher concentrations of tuna but smaller.. caught 6 ranging between 60-110lbs. I wish I had a pic of the boat but it was a 42’ custom center console with quad 350s on the back. Even with 5-6 ft seas, we ran 40-45mph, however, we were averaging 0.5 mpg 😳.
Home Run Charters is a first class operation with great guides, equipment, and lodging. We all took plenty of fish home along with lots of memories. If you go on one of these trips, be sure to invite friends with strong backs because this is not a one man job..

That is awesome!!!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Back in 1994 the then girlfriend now wife and I went to Matzalan. Got a charter who put us on the fish pretty quick, caught a couple of Sailfish then ran into a school of Yellow Fin Tuna, they were a work out.

I've fished several times out of Venice with my friend Willie. We have not gotten into the tuna. I don't think I could take 55 miles at that speed. I know it has to beat you up. What a great spot to fish!

They set you in the back on bean bag chairs.. the impact between waves gets rough at times but it’s the rain and spray hitting you in the face for 1-2 hours that will wear on you. Good rain gear is a must.

Yep. They never give up. We’d get several to about 30 ft from the boat and the fight would go on and on for
Up to another 1/2 hour. The big one took about 1.5 hours and all of us rotated on the rod.

We didn’t lose any to sharks fortunately, but there were a lot on the surface stealing bait. We did see a barracuda pass by when pulling one up to the boat..

Nice trip, great photos! I used to do long range tuna trips before I started hunting again. Can't afford to do both. I went out of San Diego, Freeport, Galveston, Port Aransas, and Venice. Venice is the only one you could do day trips due to the closeness of the Hump to the mouth of the Delta. I went there during the cold winter months when the yellowfin came to the Hump. My biggest is 185. In Texas you have to go 100 miles to get to the floaters off the continental shelf so those were 3-5 day trips. I miss the tuna fishing but oh it's so expensive frown You can get a year round deer lease for the cost of one long range trip. I had a friend that had a 47' Post Sportfisher at the Galveston Yacht Club. That made things cheaper as 6 of us would go out with him and split costs. But he sold his boat about the time I started hunting again.

Did you do any fishing for them with top water lures? One of the ways we would fish for them was with heavy duty spinning rods, casting large GT surface lures to the busting tuna. Nothing like having a yellowfin blow up on your surface lure at 60mph...NOTHING... Bass fishing just was never the same after that.

Pure greatness. You can grill them like a steak.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

It is expensive especially when you opt to pay for the fuel....I think it all averaged out to about $15/lbs by the time it was all said and done.

We trolled for a short stint looking for wahoo, but all the tuna were on live bait. We used mullet the first day on the bigger fish and caught some smaller looking bait for day two on those smaller tuna. You’d only see one or two hit that bait on top before you had a bite. Never saw a frenzy go off where you’d see several on top at once.

I heard of the hump at 60 miles or so, but believe they’re out there in February and March. We did see a boat from Destin at one oil rig and several from Mobile AL
