This is a buck I shot this weekend in Mills County on our MLD ranch. Any idea what causes them to be in velvet this late? I don’t think I have seen one this late that had full velvet.

Did he have nuts? Maybe a stag

Interesting you asked that. I’m no expert on deer nuts (or any others for that matter), but his nuts seemed smaller than normal.

Many years ago a family member killed a nice buck in late December that was still in velvet. It had no testicles. We could only speculate how it lost them...maybe being caught in a barb wire fence.

We hunted Mason county for years and killed one every other year on average. It’s fairly common in the hill country. Their nuts were usually the size of grapes or smaller.
One good thing about it, the bucks sure were tasty without all that testosterone running through their veins

That happened to me a few years back. This picture was on Christmas day. He didnt have any nuts. That was the best tasting deer I ever had. It was like eating a steer.
