I got stung by an Asp while dove hunting last Thursday morning in the Waller area. I was standing in shrubs around a cut corn field. I never saw it, but I suspect it brushed of a shrub into my shell pouch. I rested my hand inside the pouch and got stuck in the back of my hand. When I pulled my hand out, it rolled down in between my fingers and got me again. I took off my belt and threw it away from me thinking I had a wasp nest in it. I couldn't find a sting, but my hand was on fire. The field was fogged in, and there was a lot more hunt left. I tried to stick it out, but within 30 minutes the pain became unbearable. I collected my belt, and tried to see if I could find what was in the pouch, but I couldn't find anything. At this point I suspected it to be an Asp, but I wasn't sure. I drove home with my hand over the a/c vent on blast. It was the best relief I could find. I ended up getting to a nearby clinic. About that time, the wound started to appear, and confirmed that it was an Asp. My hand swelled, got very hot, and began to sweat profusely in the area of the sting. I got loaded up on steroid and antibiotics. The intensity of the sting was full strength for about seven hours, and was throbbing well into the next morning. As if there isn't enough to watch out for already, I'd highly recommend checking bags and pouch pockets. Trust me, this sucked. These things can really ruin your day.

Worst insect bite I ever encoutered. When I was about 14 years old one got in my bed and I rolled over on it. I have never experienced pain like that and it was not fun.

Seen them all my life. I have never touched one, but always wondered how bad it was. One of my uncles touched one and was allergic and wound up in the hospital with it as a teen.
Other than itching/burning was there any other reason you sought medical attention?

ouch.... never hot hit by one of those. Hope i dont. How are you now? Fine now, just itchy. Other than itching/burning was there any other reason you sought medical attention? I wasn't entirely sure what it was, I hoping they could tell me. Also, I was hoping the pain could be treated in some manner.

I guess we are talking about an asp caterpillar? When one uses the word asp by itself, my mind references the venomous serpent used biblically.
But maybe I’m weird.

Never heard of those things. Its like a porcupine insect. It almost looks on your skin like poison ivy. That sucks, hopes its better.
I've been hit by red wasps before and they pack a big punch. My pest guy says they are worse than a scorpion.

When I was a kid I thought it was a cute little caterpillar, I let it rest on the top of my arm while I petted it with my other hand. It stung the crap out if me lol.

Tobacco juice will give you some relief if there is a next time. Tobacco juice works. I was climbing tree when I was a kid. When I jumped up to grab the limb there was an asp on the top. I smashed the asp with my fingers. It hurt! Grandma grabbed a cigarette and made me spit on it and then roll it around on the sting. It took about 30 minutes to work, then we were out climbing trees again.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I've been bitten/stung by a lot of different critters, including a scorpion, and the asp was easily the worst of all of them. I got stung on my forearm and it swelled up to the point my brother said it looked like Popeye. My mom put some stuff on it she called bluing, but I don't know exactly what it was.

One dropped on my brothers shirtless back while playing under an ash tree back in the 60’s. He started running around screaming in pain, like his a** was on fire!

They look soft, furry and harmless. Google "puss worm" or "puss caterpillar" to see what they look like. Supposedly the most poisonous caterpillars in the U.S.
