How do you go about sighting in your rifle every year? I have been hunting with my Remington 700 .270 for 42 seasons, so I know how it shoots pretty well. The last 3 seasons I shot it one time before the season at a target and it was almost exactly 1.5 inches high and less than a 1/4 inch left or right. I put the gun back in the case after 1 single shot and was ready to hunt. I figure that is how it will shoot with a cold barrel when I actually shoot at an animal. When I was younger I would shoot it 3-4 times trying to see how the gun grouped and a few times I found myself chasing the bullet on paper when adjusting the scope.

I bought this gun from k-mart in 1977 for 156 dollars. I was 18, just moved out after HS graduation and could not afford a scope at the time. I went to Pigeon Road shooting range to shoot the gun anyway because I was so excited to finally have a deer rifle. I fired it one time and went to check the target. After walking 100 yards I could not believe that my first shot with a high powered rifle was exactly in the bullseye. It looked like I had taken a pencil and punched a hole in the target and this was with open sights. I finally saved another 69 dollars and bought a Redfield 6 power scope before the season started and used that scope for 30 years and sold it for 60 dollars in 2007.

If you want to double your money I'll buy the rifle and you won't have to worry about it.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I have a 300 yard range outside my front door. I have berm's at 100, 200 and 300 yards, and I sight in dead on at 200 yards. Usually a 3 shot group and I'm good to go.

I bought my first "real deer rifle," a Rem 700 .270 in 1978. Once it was sighted in, It never moved...until I started upgrading scopes and handloading to experiment with different loads. Now I can chase the holes around on the target, but I enjoy fiddling with it and the continued practice is a good thing. Yes, the first cold shot is the one that counts.

I usually leave a little oil in the barrel after the season is over so I fire it a few times to make sure the oil is out and the aim is still on.

POI on the first one doesn't count.

My wifes old 30-06, I shoot one time each year to sight it in. Hits 2" high at 100. Old 4 power Weaver scope. Put it back in case. She has killed 24
animals with 24 shots with the gun.

I've been wagging my 6.8 around as a truck gun. I shot it Saturday @100yds and it was 1.25" low and 1" right. I need to check the ring/base torque on it and shoot it again.

Is Pidgeon Rd shop still there? I frequented that place a lot back in my day. The old man and his wife ran it, she had a wig that was 10' tall. Their son was a decent gunsmith too if I remember!

My gun leaves the safe and goes to the blind then back in the safe. No riding. Haven't sighted it in 10 years. My 7.62X54 rides in my truck and is open sight.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

We shoot a couple rounds before the season every year just to check and to clear the barrel of oil. We did ours yesterday [Linked Image]

It is still there. Roger is the owner but his mind is not what it used to be, but he is probably at least 80. Wanda still has the tall hair and just as nice as she ever was. Allen the son is still going strong. Star Arms closed in Stephenville a few weeks ago so they are probably busier than ever.

My rifles are far more accurate than I am, which is why I practice throughout the year. Besides, shooting is fun and it gives you more time to enjoy what you have invested in your firearms. I also hunt hogs quite often during the off season so the practice keeps me tuned up for that as well.

I clean my gun after every season. I'll shoot with new ammo or a new hand load in the spring. I'll go to the range in October and shoot one-two rounds just to make sure scope hasn't moved. After that, I'm good to go........

God bless John Wayne!

I shoot through the year and tinker with testing loads, but the zero does change with temperatures, some loads more than others.

I try to zero dead on at 100 yards and then adjust for distance and wind, if needed in the specific conditions.

The key is to have a good 100 yard zero.

Checked my zero a couple of weeks ago before going out.

The .308 below had been knocked over in a deer blind by my wife helping me in the dark.

Wasn't too worried about it, but wanted to check it anyway. She was more worried about it than me.

The NF scope, rings, and pic rail all held in place despite a pretty good thump.

Shot a 5 shot group with the .308 and 3 shots with the .300 Win Mag.

Shots were done fairly quickly to simulate how followup shots are made in the field.

Put on a bipod and used a small square bean bag in the rear.

Wind was blowing hard from 5 o'clock, so did not make any adjustments based on the placement below.

Montana Rifle Company .308 Win with a Barnes 130 gr TTSX.

5 shots - the pulled shot was the driver nut coming loose. hammer

Montana Rifle Company .300 Win Mag with Barnes 165 gr TTSX

3 shots - the cold dirty bore shot is the lowest, second shot climbed a bit, and the third shot climbed some more.

Good to know how a barrel will move like that as it heats up, or maybe it was the driver nut coming loose again. smile

I check the zero and shoot a group. I always shoot one or two rounds to foul the barrel before hunting. I've found that the first round out of even a lightly oiled barrel is high.

I shoot mine throughout the year, usually about once a month. When deer season starts I don't do anything as long as the rifle hasn't been dropped or knocked over somehow.

Absolutely. I'm surprised he has anything in his store that isn't a .270. Wanda was always great. Allen was as good as ive ever seen.

I shoot some every month, year around. I don't leave barrels oily... run dry patches through them after cleaning. I check a group at 100 and 300 before the season, last week actually. Then I go out the next two days and shoot one round at 100 the first day, and one round at 300 the second day. Then leave it alone.

Unless something happens I want to know where the first shot out of a clean, cold, dry barrel is going for hunting purposes.

If you are getting major changes from cold or hot barrels, or from clean or fouled barrels, I'd be looking for a reason. A slight, minuscule difference, sure, but these are hunting rifles not bench rest guns.

All of those statements are true. I actually went to school with Allen and we had a dairy behind Rogers land on the pigeon road back in the early 60`s. Roger farmed peanuts back then and I can remember seeing Wanda riding a tractor with an umbrella on it and digging peanuts when I was 6 or 7 years old. She is a tough old gal to say the least.

I've called many a yote off their coastal at night after they cut. I bet I’d hate to see how chopped up all that country is now. I dated a girl that use to rent a house, behind there.

Good to hear!. I was there in the early 90's. Between the Dodge House, M&W's and Pidgeon Rd., I had all my bases covered!
