Sharp-shins are a completely different raptor, though they do look similar. Sharp is meaner though. They are off the coopers hawk chain of Accipiters

I don’t know the technical name. We call them sharpshins... to see them stalk, flush, and ambush a quail is impressive!

Excellent pictures of amazing animals... as usual. These are the most efficient killers of the avian world I’ve ever seen. Devastating to quail, but you have to admire their tactics and abilities. That is a Kestrel and the first one I have had a chance to photograph. They are very small...dove size small. I believe they are one of or if not the smallest falcons. They mainly feed on insects, small rodents and small birds. Never seen one catch or eat a quail. I have seen Cooper's Hawk(we called them Blue Darters) and Merlins catch and eat quail, doves and even Cardinals.
