Three things I'll never loan out or borrow. ATV, pressure washer, or chain saw. They'll find a way to be damaged in the end.

The best way to see your ATV/UTV damaged or mechanically disabled is to loan yours to someone.

I have loaned mine out before and I have borrowed. I only have 2 rules when I lend out - I know they take care of their stuff and they have the $$ if they wreck it to fix or replace it. Its a pretty short list though.

I would pass on this. If someone does not know you well, they most likely will not participate. If they are a friend or family member, you just put a relationship at risk, with the only upside being saving some money (if nothing breaks). I don't borrow anything from anyone. Nothing but downside. Make due without, rent, or buy your own.

Agree 100%. Family friends visiting us in Colorado. I let the teenage daughter use my Polaris Ranger Crew. She started it up, threw it in Reverse and SLAMMED the pedal to the metal. All you could hear was grinding and metal spitting out. Her Dad then tells me, "She has never driven one of these before." WTF...why tell me that after she destroyed my machine! My wife, not wanting to make a big deal of it, says, "Oh it's OK." Me paying $1800 and the dealer taking apart the whole machine to put on a new reverse chain later, it was OK.

That was summer of 2018. Last summer, my 13 year old son's friend F'd up one of our Polaris Sportsman 500's. This unit was shared by my BIL and my family. So that was another $1500 that we had to pay. On this occasion, I saw the kid riding and he wasn't doing anything crazy, but ran over some sagebrush and messed up a whole bunch of things.

Moral of the story, don't ever loan out ATVs/UTVs to anybody unless it is understood that they know how to properly drive them and that they will pay for any and all damage that occurs while in their possession.

There is only one person I ever loan anything to and that is my neighbor. He runs a business and is very mechanically savvy and knows how to take care of stuff. He also has the means to pay for anything he screws up without blinking. He has lots of equipment like I do and we sort of share things I guess is the best way to put it. We both have tracked skid steers and we don’t buy the same attachments other than basic ones. For example he has a post pounder, I have a trencher. He needs a trencher he borrows mine. I need a post pounder I borrow his. I would let him borrow my ATV and he would let me borrow his. Both of us own several so it likely would never happen.

I don’t look down or judge people but a lot of times people want to borrow expensive things and have no way to fix or replace them if they mess them up. For example my cousin is a good guy but financially very irresponsible. Paycheck to paycheck, rents, and is always broke. He wanted to borrow my 80k skid steer for the weekend. Sorry bud that is not a risk I am willing to take. There are countless things you could mess up and I know I wouldn’t get one cent out of you to fix it.
