For the first time I have started cleaning really old/dirty brass with stainless. I have added a small amount of dish soap and Lemi Shine. The brass is coming out with a copper look rather than brass. What am I doing wrong?

Run the pins alone in degreaser for 30 minutes. Switch out the water, and run the brass again. Don't overdo the Lemi-Shine.

The only time I’ve ever had that happen is when a aluminum washer got mixed in with my brass .

Don't overdo the Lemi-Shine. +1 Before my pins get too dirty (after 4 or 5 big loads) I tumble in Zep Purple degreaser (about 1 oz to gallon). Using Lemi-shine or canning citric acid, too little is better than too much. About 1/4 tsp to a gallon.

Thanks for the pointers. That Al washer has me wondering if the nickel plated case that was in there caused the copper appearance. I don't care about the color, I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong and degrade the integrity of the brass.

Happens to me due to resizing lube contamination. That, and you eventually have to clean your stainless pins too. Degreaser is the best option as mentioned.

To much Lemi Shine will turn it orange.

Too much lemi-shine is my vote, I have been there! I have never had to run a degreaser though. I just do a good rinse after they run. I have used imperial lube, Lanolin mix, and also Mobil 1 oil without having to degrease. I might give it a try to see if it makes any difference.
