Hey all,

Hope you're doing well and staying safe! Looking to hunt Spring bear - I'd prefer fall 2021 but I know I'll be out of the country for a bit then. Looking to some states that offer Spring bear seasons - Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

Have you had a great experience with an outfitter in these states - or experiences that would make you NOT go back with a certain outfitter? Not looking to start a gripefest, but appreciate being steered away from bad outfits.

Would appreciate your recommendations!

I had very good luck hunting black bear with Joe Bowen, Tomah Mountain Outfitters, in upstate Maine. Great guy. I went in the fall, but I think he also does spring hunts.

Good luck! Bear hunting ranks at the top for me. Don't know any outfitters in that part of the world but depending on what you are after i would offer the following:

- baited hunts probably have the highest success rate and can yield some decent size bears but getting a true trophy (for me that would be a 400 lb plus black bear with a 21+ inch skull) on a bait is rare
- guided stalk will have a lower success rate but a better chance at a trophy
- hound hunts are exciting as hell but you better be in good shape as you will cover a lot of ground over all kinds of terrain and it could be 12 or 18 hours of hard pushing. Better chance at a trophy as well.

All my bear hunts are DIY and usually baited but the odd time walk and stalk. 8 bears in the last 5 years but typically i am after eaters and being solo they usually come around the 200 to 250 lb mark. If i was paying for a hunt though i would be looking for something bigger.

I’d go to coastal British Columbia for a spring bear hunt if I was looking to go outfitted.

Go on a hunt with hounds in NM or AZ, way more exciting than sitting on a barrel of donuts. I would get in touch with Calvin Redhouse in the Navajo Nation and book a hunt with him. Permits are $1,000 and then pay Calvin who is a licensed Navajo Guide to take you with his hounds. Lots of color phase bears in that area and above average size.
Adios,
Gary

Would you consider an Alberta hunt?

We have bear problems and my neighbor is an outfitter and a top shelf kinda guy.
He and his kids have killed 6 Bear in the past couple of weeks less then a half a mile from our house but they've denned up now and won't be back till spring.

For now border restrictions have made for a very lean year for him and his family but we are hoping those restrictions will end as soon as your election is over.

With the year he's had he may offer some sort of discount in the spring. Worth checking out if anyone is interested. He also offers guided Wolf and Moose hunts. He may do more, I don't know all of his business.

I can PM his contact information.

Do for yourself as much as you can, eat what nature provides as much as you can. This is the key to sleeping well and living long.

Not sure about OP, but I'd be interested. I've wanted to hunt black bear for a few years now
