Looking at one in 270. Never owned a Savage and looking for some input or feedback.

I have a Savage 16 which is just the short action of the same rifle. I have since changed the barrel but it’s was very accurate rifle in stock trim. They are not as refined as some more expensive rifles but I’ve never had an issue with one either. People talk of extractor issues but I think that comes with a high round count. I’m sure they can give you more information on that.

My experiences align with the above. Ive never had issues with ejection, but i havent shot it enough to get to that point.

Have to agree. Every Savage I’ve owned has been a great shooter. Currently have a Savage Model 11 in 6.5 Creedmoor that shoots small groups with factory Hornady ammo.

I have one in 25-06. Has been very accurate and reliable.

They are great hunting rifles, I own a bunch of them and have never had an issue with one. Great shooters.

The extractor issue that pops up from time to time on here comes from folks who are doing a lot of heavy competition type shooting, and are a lot harder on their rifles than the average shooter/deer hunter. For the price, you can't beat a Savage IMO.

I got a few Savages. In short:

Pros:
Very cost effective accuracy

Cons:
Very cost effective accuracy, so all the other parts they cheap out as much as possible. Extraction problems but only after alot of rounds cycled.

I think they are fine to great hunting rifles, especially for price.

I own two, an Axis II XP chambered in .243 that I picked up cheap at Academy, and Model 110 125th Anniversary Model 110 6.5 Creedmoor that I purchased after becoming so pleased with the Axis. Both are a joy to shoot and a lot more accurate than their owner. Both made in the U.S.A.

You can spend a lot more and not necessarily get a lot better factory rifle.

Easily half of my rifle inventory is Savage in 110 form or one of the other variants. Yeah, they ain’t sexy like a Mark 5 Weatherby or finely machined like a Sako, they are what they are, an affordable, accurate (usually) kinda ugly (always) bolt action rifle.

Are you looking at the 116 Hunter XP package version? If so it should come with the Accu trigger which is good, as you can adjust it from roughly 3-6 lbs. The scope (Nikon iirc) is “meh” like most package gun scopes. The stock will be flimsy as you would expect at that price point.

With all that said, it should shoot 1” @ 100yds pretty easily though. A lot of people have said that “Savage is the most accurate rifle right outta the box“ Bold statement considering how many truly “accurate right outta the box” rifles we have these days. I prefer to say that if you get a Savage, chances are good that it will be accurate, period.

The reasons I like Savage is the price, and the fact I can easily find aftermarket parts for it anywhere. Heck if I can swap the barrel out, anyone can, that goes for the trigger too.

Savage is known for two things. Excellent accuracy 100% of the time, and extraction issues sometimes. For the $, they are great rifles.

I've got a Savage Model 110 in 243 that I bought used from an old feller that was hanging it up in 1995. He bought it new and used it for decades every deer season. I have no idea how many rounds I've put through it in the last 25 yrs, or how many rounds that nice old man put through it before me, but I can tell you that it's a lot and that's just me.... That old rifle is still the first one I grab out of the safe most of the time. I am still waiting on an extractor issue..... whistle

I agree and disagree to a point. I still think the savage is a great value, but many users put more rounds through a rifle in one range session than i do in 5 years. When i first started reloading i put 2-300 rounds through my 270 a year, i was interested in it and had free time in the summers and pretty much all the time. Now a days im thankful when i have to take a dump because i get to stop and sit down. I havent fired 20 rounds through it in 5 years, but it kills a deer or so every year.

I totally had the issue. Having to replace the extractor lead me down a deep rabbit hole ultimately ending up replacing the recoil lug and bedding the stock. Enjoyed every minute of it too. i couldn't drive the pin out so I got a new bolt head, which didn't headspace correctly and my imagine just took over my wallet.
My best guess is that original bolt head on my current model 12 action was about 3-4k or more.

In all honesty, I probably could have driven the pin out but I was looking for an excuse to play with my Savage. One of Savage's HUGE pros is that it's a very DIY friendly platform. while my next tacticool rifle won't be a Savage, I'd easily get a hunting rifle if I needed another one. I have 0 regrets about all the time, money and effort I put into my Savage. Fantastic learning experience and plenty accurate enough to teach me how to shoot better.

I own and have built quite a few Savages. I have put 2500 rounds plus through one of them and never had a problem. I got gun shy once with all the talk about the extractors breaking so I started carrying an extra bolt. In 5 years never had to use it.

That's been my experience too. I've got a late 90's model 116 action that I built a long range 7 Rem Mag off of, and it extracts perfectly, even on slow motion bolt pulls. But I've got a 5 year old 10T that doesn't always extract if you work the bolt slowly. I don't hunt or shoot competition with the 10T, so I don't worry about the extraction.

I've got 5 Savages and really enjoy them; Stevens 200 with X-caliber 6.5x55 barrel, 12FV with Criterion 223 Rem barrel, 10 FCP-SR with factory 308 Win barrel, 110 Long Range Hunter with factory 300 WM barrel and I just bought a model 10 BA Stealth in 6.5 Creedmoor. All of them will shoot 3/4 MOA or less with tuned handloads, the BA stealth will shoot 1/2 MOA hopefully better after some load development and the 12FV will shoot less than 3/8 MOA, its the most accurate rifle I've ever shot.

I enjoy tinkering with guns and the Savages are great for tinkering. I can change barrels easily and in addition to the chamberings above I also have barrels in 270 Win, and 257 Roberts.

I have never experienced any extraction issues with these guns and have fired well over a thousand rounds each through the Stevens 200 and the 12FV and about 650 rounds through the LRH. Not saying the problem doesn't exist I just that haven't experienced it.
