I'm trying to figure out what size and what type of material to get for baseboards. I have 9ft ceiling and was thinking about 5 inch baseboards. Is a 5 inch baseboard too big? Also what type of material? They have pvc, mdf, and wood. Suggestions welcome.

5” is very manageable. Could even stack a 1X6, with a pc of baseboard on top for more height. Combinations are endless. You have 9’ ceilings but what style is the home? Modern, farmhouse, colonial etc? That all plays into the styling. Find a good cabinet person, maybe not so much a flooring one in my opinion.

I miss running crown sometimes. Life sure was simpler back then.

Most builders use MDF. But if it ever gets wet it will swell and be ruined. I used pine for mine that we pained - simple 1x4 with no trim on top.

My in-laws recently did a remodel and went with a simple 1x4 for trim. At first i didnt like the look, but after it was all painted etc. it looks really good.

The house kinda reminds me of a school house in front. We are going for a rustic/farmhouse inside. The wife is gonna get a white farmhouse kitchen.

The tile guy wanted to do 1/4" round with the existing baseboards, but i don't like the look of quarter round and our current baseboards are very busy. I want to go with a very plain old school 5" baseboard for a clean classic look. We are getting wood look tile down stairs, and wood on the stairs and upstairs.

Looks like 5" won't be to tall. Anyone work with pvc? Or should I just stick to wood?

I don't mind the PVC. You have to turn down your compressor to the lower limit of the gun or the nails will punch through.

Jesus! How long does it take to lay tile? Its a pain making sure someone is home. These guys have been at it for six straight days and its seems like they are moving so slow. Its a little over 1100 sqft of tile.

Nope, they are getting paid by the job. They asked if they could do the baseboards for us...... absolutely not!

That's a job that shouldn't be rushed. Have to make sure they level everything properly so you don't have trip zones or broken tiles later on. I've done a few. Takes time.

Yeah, I don't know. Maybe they are just slow. They put down a 4' x 54' area today.

I feel bad for ya man. Hope they speed up. I can't stand having people I don't know in my house.

Are they taking so much time on prep work? Laying it out, cleaning the slab, buttering, enduring level etc? Or are they just fat slobs who gab too much?

We're doing trim right now. New farmhouse style house. We're putting 1x6 paint grade wood down for base. 1x4 around windows/doors with a bullnose surrounding that.

Pics if you don't mind, and what did you do around the doors? We have a different molding around our doors im thinking of replacing all that also.

This isn’t my house. It’s another built by my contractor but we’re copying the trim. I’ll take some pics of mine in the light tomorrow. [Linked Image]
