Sorry about all the posts asking for advice, I'm just trying to make as informed a decision as possible. After shouldering many, I really have felt most comfortable with the Browning Maxus and Browning A5 shotguns. To that end, I have a couple questions:
1) I've read a lot of input from y'all, but haven't heard anyone mention the Maxus. Anyone use this shotgun and have any feedback?
2) I hear people talk about the "modern era" A5. When was the redesign and which is better? What's the difference?

As always, thanks for all the wisdom and expertise. You guys are a lifesaver.

I'm no expert, the unly gun I own is a Benelli Nova and couldnt be happier. But my favorite gun I've ever shot belonged to my friend's uncle. Browning Maxus. Gonna be my first inertia/semi gun when I'm on a bigger budget. Shot 8-10 different shotguns over the years and never enjoyed anything as much as the Maxus. My frined's uncle said it's a great all around gun but preferes it for dove and upland birds. Doesnt want to put it through the conditions of duck hunting.

For me -I think the maxus is one of, if not the most comfortable, smoothest and best swinging autos out there. I had one since it was released in 2009. I’ve abused it, meaning cases of golden pheasant and hypersonic 3’s and 3.5’s(geese),it’s been tossed into the back of pickups and boats from North Dakota to down to LLM, and every thing East and west. I think it’s about at the end of its life cycle. Same token my buddy, SBE’3 bit dust too, it was a guide gun and only made it 5 years.

Moral of the story, it’s a coin toss on longevity of a gas vs inertia.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either, I do prefer the feel of the Maxus over the fake A5

The fake A5 is a patent expiration clone’ish of Benelli, only advantage I see is weight.

Just FYI, the maxus is a gas gun.

I have never shot one. But its basically a lightened up restyled gold hunter. I've been shooting gold hunters for 20 years and am very happy. I do need to shoot a maxus to see the difference.

Maxus or A-5 boil down to fit. As to the A-5 redesign, the original was known as the Auto five. It is a blow back recoil operated auto loader. Designed by John Motherf_ _ _ _ _n Browning and probably the most iconic auto loader ever built. Friction rings and springs needed to be set correctly but the old “humpback” is utterly reliable. In its time it was the best. I still have one and love the fit and durability. I enjoy hunting with it some each year and for longevity it was better than today’s newer designs but has more recoil.

I've shot both

I own the new A5 and the browning silver hunter which is extremely close to the SX3 and Maxus. Pretty much the same guns.

The new A5 (if you get a good one) Is amazing. The feel is awesome, very reliable, very crisp action.

Mine has shot all kinds of shells and has done great. I will say the first few boxes it had a few hang ups but after that it's been flawless..

Notice I said "if you get a good one". The problem is I've seen a lot of people say they e had issues. I'm just glad mine has been good because the fit and feel is awesome.

The Maxus is looks great, my good hunting buddy has put about 10 hard seasons on his SX3 and I've put about the same in my silver and those three guns are pretty much identical as far as the internals.

I wouldn't buy a new Browning unless it was the old A5. There are much better shotguns on the market, especially at that price point.

Unfortunately, most new hunters buy crappy shotguns because they're pretty and shiny and learn the hard way. They suck you in like a smokin hot chick. That's neurotic, cheats, lies, and craps in the bed. And you don't discover the extent of her flaws until you're married to her.

Shotguns are no different. I suspect you'll soon find out.

I just bought the a new A5 4 months ago or so. So far, I've shot between 6-700 rounds and it has cycled every type of shell that I've put through it. First day out, I patterned it with the factory chokes, a kicks high flyer and a buddy's Carlsons choke. Used every type of shell I had - Steel #6's all the way up to BB and several types of lead. Cheapo Winchester to Hevi Shot.
Have not had a failure to fire yet. Have intentionally tried to make it fail to eject and have been successful. Light, cheap loads with the gun held gingerly at my side (not shouldered) did the trick.
Went to Wichita Falls second week of dove season and purposefully left it in the side by side and outside of the house at my buddy's ranch for 4 windy days. On morning 4 of the trip, Mr Browning finally had a disagreement with the dust and the dirt he had been collecting and would not cycle correctly.
As with most things, if you fail to take care of it, you should expect to have problems. A cleaning between every hard hunt or two should alleviate any issues.
In my opinion it handles well, looks good and takes care of business. I'm happy with my purchase.

krump, here's a lot of info on the Maxus, enough to keep you busy reading a while. Scroll past the first few links and take your pick. (Id recommend starting with the SBE2 vs Maxus comparison)

edit - the link doesnt work but if you cut and past it into a browser it will take you to www.randywakeman.com. He has some good info on just about any shotgun you're interested in. Or you can just go to his web page and scroll down and use the Google search bar to find his reviews and opinions of any shotguns you're interested in. Have fun and good luck with whatever you get!

Not a fan of gas guns so won’t give any help about the maxus.
As for the the A5 I bought one in 2012 when the 3.5 in version was released. Have used that gun in every weather condition you can imagine and given it hell and she was always treated me way better than I did her. Not once has she failed on me and I have not needed to replace anything. Shot everything from dove to ducks to turkey to pigs with it and run every load/ shot size threw it with no problems at all. It is a great shotgun in my opinion and I even bought the 16 gauge version in 2016 when it was released as a dove gun only bc I loved the 12 gauge so much. Bought it to take some of the pressure of the 12 gauge. If they ever come out with a 20 gauge version I will be buying it too.

You can't go wrong either way. I have had a Maxus pretty much since they came out. It has been an awesome gun, it is the softest shooting gun I own. I let my dad shoot it most of the time as it is a softer shooter... he will hunt ducks with the gun darn near submerged most of the time, he has fallen on it and plugged it up with mud while pheasant hunting. I like the way it points and it works. One of my good buddies just got the A5 and he loves it, can't go wrong with the B shotguns.

Bought the new A5 this summer and I’ve run about a thousand rounds through it. It doesn’t like the Winchester light loads, but it’s run everything else flawlessly. I thought long and hard trying to decide between it and a SBEIII, but I’m happy with my choice. I love the weight and the sight picture over that humpback is great!

I have both the Maxus and the new A5. I shot the Maxus for years before I got the new A5, but since I got the new A5, the Maxus hasn't seen any use. I just shoot the A5 better, it comes up and points better. The longer sighting plane works well for me. Both have the speed load feature which I grew up on with an old Belgian Light Twelve. It's just a matter of personal choice in my opinion.

The best bet would be to shoot both and see which you like the best.

Case, you have any interest in selling the Maxus then?

I second all the folks using the new A5 without issue. This is my go to gun for over 4 years now. September- January. Thousands of rounds....multiple flavors. It just fits me and doesn't ask for much in return.

Just had my CZ Drake all terrain returned from CZ (fore end latch wouldn't go flat) I will use it rather than the 725 Browning.
