I once had 14 baby quail in a cage with fairly small squares in my large quail pen and when I checked one day everyone was gone except for one small feather. The old Texas rat snake had a nice big meal.

I remember as a kid killing egg snakes in my grandmas chicken coop. One day my brother and I killed 6 of them and hung them all on her front gate, scared the carp out of my mom when she came to pick us up.

Rat/chicken snake.

If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Well I think we finally have the culprit. All our hens are full grown, but last week I got 3 new pullets to add to the flock. Yesterday the wife went out to get the eggs and this thing was in the coop eating one of the new pullets. The funny thing was the other chickens were not afraid of him. We have a huge run and they could have been outside, instead they were walking around him like he was part of the flock. She called me at work and I rushed home. She stayed in front of the door and he never came out. So when I get there I grab a rake with 4 long spikes, figure I will spike him. I pull back a bale of hay that I keep in the coop and it is hollowed out. He has been living in my coop with my chickens probably for months. After a brief chase across the yard I am able to dispatch this big male possum. Ma and Pa Defended the homestead!!

I don't think he's dead! He's just playing possum!
