Waiting for a particular buck..did not want to end my hunt this morning..that's why I didn't shoot..there will be plenty of time to do that later on in the gun season..I stood up and chucked rocks..didn't take but one

Consider attaching a cord to the rock on the feeder. When the hogs get in position, you can pull on the tether and let things fall where they may.

Crossbows are quiet, so take the chance & hit one of those sows. Some hog panels around your feeder would be a great investment.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Agree with the crossbow and or slingshot.

When my son and I were out scouting early season looking for deer for clients I kept a 22 in the blind with us. I cannot count how many he killed with that bolt action 22!

I can tell you this much, if the hogs are a problem and there all the time, the best thing you can do is educate them by killing off a few of them!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

No pig gets a pass on my place. I would be slinging an arrow.

I carry a special arrow for hogs. It’s an old practice arrow with a cheap broad head on it. Save the expensive arrows and broad heads for deer

Pick the biggest sow and put an arrow through her gut and she’ll run off with all the others following. Then they all get to watch her die a slow miserable death. Somewhat effective but they’re slow learners. Sometimes they make noise but deer are used to their noisy asses.

If you're coming for mine, you better have yours!

Understand your decision, but think I would have gone ahead and slung an arrow. If the hog fell, I would probably leave it lay until ready to pack up and head in. Human movement would probably be more of a detractant to deer than the dying pig. Also, this might condition the other hogs to stay away - even if only for a few days.

I am disappointed to read on this forum that a hunter, on purpose, would wound an animal by gut shooting with an arrow or bullet in such a way to carry the guts hanging out and die a slow death that could take as long as a month or longer to die. Animal cruelty at best. In my opinion, it is our job as hunters to take down animals in as humanly way possible.

I’m disappointed to see a hunter publicly scold another, and then just to make it worse some one publicly agree with him. Left that stuff to the bass fishing people.

Do you feel guilty when you put out rat poison, what about any bug deterrent such as amdro or even throwing soapy water on a wasp nest. Ferrel hogs are no different than roaches ants or wasp.

These are the types of things that will eventually get hunting banned. Feral hogs are mammals not insects. If the anti hunting community knew that hunters did this type of stuff and it became mainstream news, laws would get passed because of it. If you don’t have more respect for the animals God gave us to enjoy then you don’t deserve to hunt. I love hunting but animal cruelty is not right. Pigs are smart animals. They say they are smarter than deer. There is no good reason to gut shoot anything. People do it because they are lazy

No. A hunter publicly scolding another hunter is what will eventually get hunting banned.

A non-native or introduced species is no different than a fire ant.

That is ridiculous. How can you compare an insect and a mammal. Also, scolding? Really?

It’s called ethics.

Yes, you are now scolding me, good job. Takes a real man to win an argument on the internet.

RULE #1. When hunting- if you don’t own the land, respect the land owner.

IMO most landowners do not own the land for hunting, they own it to make a profit off of it, they are giving you the right or privilege to hunt it, typically for money. The land has to be profitable or you will loose that piece of land. Very few land owners want any pigs on their land.

My land owner has clear instructions, if you see a pig or varmint the deer hunt is over.

When I shoot a pig I aim for the head, then I go find the oil field or Turbine workers and give it to them. More than once they have found me the next day or week and thanked me.

Ferrel hogs, coyotes, bobcats and many other animals do not have to be recovered and consumed by law.

With that said

The single biggest issue in the hunting community (again IMO) is hunters publicly scolding other hunters.

How are hunters who believe that other hunters should make ethical shots going to get hunting banned? Hunting bans have never made traction because of the idea behind hunting for food and how that is normal. Gut shooting pigs and letting them run off is not ok. I don't care how badly landowners want them gone.

Again, the Good Lord put these animals on this earth for us to take care of and manage. Being good stewards of the earth isn't akin to animal cruelty. Be a decent human and at least kill them quickly.

To each their own. If you had massive pig problems you might feel differently

Insect or mammal, a pest is a pest. Wasn't consideration given to the of poisoning hogs by TPW? Are snares equal to mouse traps? While I might not purposely gut shoot a hog, I would not spend looking for one that ran off. Hogs are a problem. A pest is a pest.

To the original post, this happens to me quite often. Same delima, I have limited weekends when I can go out an bow hunt, and when I do, I don't want to end the hunt early by shooting a hog with a gun, scaring off all the nearby deer. I'm also not a fan of trying to take down a hog with a bow, since they are so tough, and would probably run off with my $45 bolt.

I've found that they hate the human voice and just gently talking to them makes them take off. Here's an example from a few weeks ago.

This. That’s what Walmart cheapies are for ! roflmao

To the gut shooting controversy: I detest hogs, IMO they are worthless vermin not fit for human consumption. That said, I’ve never purposefully gut shot one. A shot through the lungs will have them dead in a minute or two and they generally won’t die under your feeder. If I’m deer hunting that’s what I’ll do, but if I’m hog killing I’ll drop them with a high shoulder shot, then drag them off for the yotes to eat.
