I've been out before daylight the last couple of mornings hoping to cross paths with a coyote and get the chance to "blood" my little L461 Brux-barreled .221 Fireball. While the yodel dogs didn't choose to make an appearance, when this old bruiser wandered out of the brush and volunteered...well, I really couldn't pass up the opportunity. Now many will say that the .221 isn't an adequate hog round, and I'll be the first to admit that the 40 grain Sierra Blitzking is a bit light-in-the-loafers for serious work on big boars...but stick one just under his ear and wonderful things can happen. Back in the '70s I had an XP-100 chambered in it that was an honest MOA shooter (off a bench, of course)...and that with only a 2x Leupold. I have a Cooper Model 21 in 20 Tactical. Over the 12 years that I've owned it, I've taken 7 hogs, and they have all been "incidental" victims that came around while I was calling or just sitting and watching a bone yard. Each of them was shot in the ear hole with either a 32 grain VMAX or a 34 grain Dog Town, all at about 70-80 yards. None of them needed an additional shot to anchor them where they fell. I have the 32 grain bullets lumbering out of the muzzle at 4108 fps, while the 34's are at 4054 fps. This rifle is very boring to shoot. The attached picture came with the rifle, and I've been able to duplicate the indicated accuracy with several different bullets and powders. If I show up to actually shoot, and deploy even a tiny bit of trigger discipline, all the bullets find their way into the same hole. When I let other folks shoot it, they get the same results. Well...dang...I have some shooters, but not like that.
As for the 221 Fireball, I always wanted one but finally decided to go with the 223. Still like the idea of a 221 though.

It's just one heck of a shooting machine. Yessir, killing hogs doesn't REQUIRE a whole lotta cartridge or bullet weight. You can get by with teeny, tiny little bullets...you just have to put them in the RIGHT place (which you and your Cooper are clearly capable of!). It boils down to (as it always does) the fact that shot placement is King. Congrats on your Cooper, BTW. I've got a 57M that finally replaced my Anschutz 1418 as my "go to" rimfire. They shoot! Mark

Nice! A lightweight bullet doesn't work well on running hogs, but in the circumstances you describe it obviously did the job.
Good luck on the 'yotes. Now that you've got a little extra attraction hopefully they'll pay a visit and join the hog.

That's for when shot placement doesn't have to be SO precise. A SIACE Alaskan in .45-70. It regulates with a 300 grain cast load that's pleasant to shoot all day...and the pigs don't seem to complain! Kinda illustrates the difference between a "shooting" rig and a "hunting" rig (where you've gotta put yourself inside of 75 yards or so). One beautiful shooting machine Punching out the hogs' lights with that beauty must be fun; and, as you say, surgical precision on bullet placement is not quite so critical. But even with the "hog" caliber firearms, I aim for a spot forward of where the neck meets the body, if at all possible.
