What I understand 1095 & 1084 steel are very close, my question, about how may seconds do you quench in oil. thank you Forrest

I do about 8-10 seconds then clamp between aluminum plates to minimize warp

Same as Ben depending on the oil used. I use Chevron 70 for 1095. I've used The 70 and lite mineral oil for 1084 or 1075 with equal results. Both are more forgiving than 1095 when it comes to heat treating.

1095 will require more soak time than 1084, I soak 1095 at 1500 degrees for ten minutes before quenching.. Do the same as the same as Ben put them on aluminum plates about two minutes. 1095 Parkes 50, 1084 does fine in canola oil. I have several quenching mediums I use, even use brine ( not recommended) for the novice, you can crack a blade. I've been doing it long enough to know the procedure that work for me..

My problem is I have no way of knowing the temperature of the blade, I heat the blade in coals until a magnet won't stick and then a little longer and then quench . Forrest

That's what most do is use a magnet, or once you've done it enough times, you can tell when the color is just right...the problem comes in when a steel needs a certain amount of soak time and it's hard to keep it at an even temperature in the coals for the time you're needing. 1084 is a great steel to use and doesn't require a soak, so it's easier to heat treat consistently. I still use it on some of my fixed blades
