I have been searching and searching for one of these and just haven't found what I want. I like stuff that not eveyone has, something off the beaten path. I'm loyal to Remington and the Model 700. I like the .220 Swift, the .204 Ruger, and the .222 Remington. I've not seen a rifle that I can't live without so I'm thinking about buying a short action rifle and then adding the barrel that I want and maybe a stock down the road. I would be hunting coyotes and bobcats within 300 yards. Anyone have experience with these three calibers? Also looking to spend around $300 on a barrel if anyone has suggestions on where to buy. Thanks for input!

Not with those but the .243 pushing a 87 grain Berger VLD 3200 fps is pretty bad medicine and allows you to reach out much farther. Granted, it’s not a very ‘exotic’ round but it does the job.

Is the 223 just too plain and boringly accurate?

Is the 223 just too plain and boringly accurate? The 222 is probably more accurate and boring that the 223. Just seems to be easy to tune one in for tiny group. Was used in BR shooting often until the PPC came into use. i'd vote 222, 50gr Hornady SXSP and some H4198 will do you right for notes out to 300 and will be low enough in coil to spot your hits.

I’ve got a swift that’s a laser and is a blast to shoot. It’s a prairie dog gun but the trip never materialized. It shoots too well to sell.
Having said all that just by the numbers the Swift is going to be king with the 222 and 204 respectfully. A buddy of mine has a cheap 204 that is a blast to shoot too. I always said if I was to build a 20 I it would have to be a Vartarg just because they are cool.
As far as looking for a barrel....post willing to buy ads here, call Alamo precision in Fort Worth and Horizon firearms in college station both do a good volume and they might have one sitting in a corner. I’d want them head spaced before I fired them. A Remage might be another option.
Good luck.

Thanks for input! This could be as easy as buying two Remington varmit in 223 and 22-250 and having a gunsmith set the barrels back and ream to .222 and 220 swift.. the 204 ruger you’d have to get a barrel for so have that one spun up for a 223 action.. If your near a dicks that sells guns they are clearing the adl varmit rifles for 400 bucks. You could literally buy 3 rifles and be well on your way to what you want for not a huge investment and the RR prefix actions are quite a bit straighter and have fewer problems than the earlier versions.

I have a .222 that's just as accurate as my .223 if not a little bit more.

Is the 223 just too plain and boringly accurate? And extremely easy to find rifles, ammo, and loading components. My personal best load testing group was shot this year with a .223 Rem.

Why not a 222 Remington Magnum with a faster twist for heavier bullets. Or a 225 Winchester with a faster twist. Personally, since I have a 220 Swift already, I’d go for the rebarrel of it, for heavier bullet use. And you could AI it to reduce brass flow. Perfect caliber to have to look down your nose at 22-250 people.

I wouldn't, but if different is that important, a 224 Weatherby Mag would sure be different.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Where can I get a barrel? Finding a short action 700 isn't hard. Might buy one and then get the barrel that I want.

Finding barrels is about as hard as finding ammo. That why I suggested having the factory barrel set back and reamed to your choice of caliber. Brux, and Krieger are my favorites and sometimes can run 6-8 mo to get. Buy directly from them, unless you run across one somewhere on a forum or something

Obviously not cut rifle, but those barrels seem like they have the same lead times any time.

The last 2 I bought came directly from Brux and it took 3-4mo to get
