Here are a few pics from my Northern New Mexico hunt this past weekend.
Rut was winding down but bulls were bugling like crazy. In the tent could hear bulls bugling all night. Hard to sleep!
Opening day was kind of a bummer, lots of hunters and campers and people riding around on ATV’s. But hey, in the elk woods on public land with my oldest on a beautiful day is hard to beat.
Second day was awesome, found a spot the only way to get to was over horrible blow down which kept out the road hunters and chased at least 6 bugling bulls all morning and didn’t see any other hunters. Could not connect for various reasons, swirling wind etc. but had a great time. Started heading back to the truck but still hunting into the wind. Spotted a bull standing behind some trees about 50 yards away, couldn’t see his antlers but had a clear shot behind the shoulder. Got setup on the sticks and had my son peek around the tree so he could make sure he was legal, his eyes got big and he gave me the thumbs up!
Fired, waited an hour and my son found him piled up about 60 yards away.
Packed and ready to go. (Blanton's in the duffle bag)
Stopped at Herd's in Jacksboro.
In a drought but beautiful weather
Could not believe how big he was when I walked up on him!
An ugly gun is not required to shoot an Elk
A mile as the crow flies from the truck
Another Herd burger!
