Anyone been on vacation? Not interested in the comments about how unsafe and dumb it is to go.
If you have actually been, how was it?

Honeymooned there years ago. Took some side trips. Loved it.

I’ve been many times. There’s a neat museum. Some cool stuff to see. The plaza is nice. There’s a lot of other places in Mexico I would recommend over Mexico City.

Guanajuato is a city I would love to go.

We are in Cancun now but want to experience real Mexico. Not resort, cater to tourists, Mexico.
Thinking about going somewhere next year for cinco de mayo or day of the dead. Been during that time?

That's what I'm really thinking of when I mentioned Guanajuato. Would really like to go there sometime.

The independence day they celebrate in Mexico is September 16 instead of May 5th. Day of the dead is a really big deal as well. Both involve festive activities, foods, concerts, parties, traditional dance, music etc.

Most of my travels have been on business so that's not a good time to go. No doubt that would be a fun time.

Would never consider it for a vacation. Been there numerous times on business. Getting around is a PITA. The smog alone makes it a no go for me. Like TurkeyHunter says, there are so many other nice places to go in Mexico.

I thought cinco de mayo was a Texas holiday.....not sure it’s celebrated all that much south of the border....

It is an authentic Mexican holiday but it's not really celebrated except to some degree in Puebla. It is not a federal holiday, so offices, banks and stores remain open.

"Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Wednesday, May 5 in 2021, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations."

My Mexican colleagues down south chuckle a bit about us celebrating it.

I lived down there for a while and stayed in Mexico City for a bit...lots of cool stuff to see but is so spread out and hectic to get around in, it kinda made it not worth spending much time there for me (and lots of sketchy parts). The central plaza is cool and the Catholic church there is unbelievable, and the pyramids are pretty awesome too! That being said, i stayed in Guadalajara, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and ended up on the beach in Puerto vallarta before coming home. Guanajuato had a cool mummy museum that i remember, but my favorite was San Miguel de Allende...lots of artisans, beautiful country and buildings, not too big, and there were actually a lot of retired americans living there at the time i visited back in 97. I would love to go back but don't think my wife would let me!haha

There used to be a Celanese Chemical plant in Central Mexico I called on a time or two quite a few years back. Central Mexico is nothing like the rest of the state.

I think it was in Querétaro where I flew into. It was a large City, had to be over half a million poeple. Really nice place with really nice people. Nothing like the boarder town where I deer hunted in Northeast Mexico or all the tourist places I used to go to and bill fish/party years back.

I have no idea if that part of the state is still nice or over ran by cartels

Thanks, Billy

In August of last year we flew down to Leon to attend a wedding, both sides of the families are pretty well off and a few hundred guest. We drove to Guanajuato and spent the day site seeing and trying as many eating joints, street vendors as we could. Awesome food, real deal stuff right there and the history of the silver mines is interesting, lots of tunnels in that city. Been to Guadalajara a few times (one was for a wedding) and enjoyed the trip. Never been to Mexico city but it isn't on my bucket list. Been to resorts on both coast several times.

Made me think of a song. Other than that I've nothing to add.

San Miguel is very nice. But tons of Americans.

More authentic is Guanajuato.

Guadalajara is big, close to Lake Chapala

Cordoba, Veracruz.

Very rich in history.
