I don't go walking around the lease by PK without a sidearm, certainly wouldn't do it up in known bear/cat country. I'd like to think I could do the same as this dude who was out on a run, presented with the same situation.... https://www.tmz.com/2020/10/12/utah-slate-canyon-hiker-stalked-by-cougar-6-minutes-survive/Charlie

Everywhere in Texas is BIG cat central if you believe all the crazies on here.
They have heard them scream, their neighbor’s brother’s cousin’s friend saw one on their place last week, they have seen their tracks, they have even found kill sites that just has to be a Mountain Lion Cougar Panther....and sometimes they are even black.
Better carry that revolver everywhere you go...especially if it is leased or owned by anyone on THF.

Well, if it were me, I would have been chunking rocks instead of filming with a cell phone. Assuming I didn't have a firearm on me which is pretty rare when I'm in the woods.

One of my lessors is terrified to walk to the blind in the dark in morning,. He thinks big kitty's are going to get him.
He wears a pistol all the time.
He needs to take up fishing.

Everywhere in Texas is BIG cat central if you believe all the crazies on here.. I know parts of east Texas are " big cat central " Seen some myself, as well as most all the neighbors along the county road. Elderly lady has lost both small dogs and cats to big cats. Tracks in the sand. Poop to be seen if you can get to it before the coyotes eat it I worry more about the meth heads and the hood rats than I do animals that I can shoot and not go to jail for. Just don't slip around like a prey animal would, and for damn sure DON'T put any deer scent on yourself

My first thought to was to chunk rocks at it also, but when your in a situation like that (and I have not been) who knows WTF is going through your mind? The arm chair QB is always a lot more rational than the guy that looks like a big kitty's next meal.

When I don't have a firearm with me I occasionally hike with a 5' staff, with a 6" blade hidden in the end. Firearm is first choice, staff with blade is second choice, rocks a distant third.
A clear conscience is often the sign of a fuzzy memory.

Not really sure about being stalked for 6 minutes. I think that was a mother with cubs and she was just bluffing to protect her young. If you watch the start of the video there is a smaller cat than walks away on the top left side of the video. The one that charges comes out of the middle of the road, several yards closer to the guy with the cell phone. I think he approached the cats wanting to take a video and got more than what he bargained for. Either way, it was a change you underwear moment.

Talked to a Border Patrol agent buddy of mine over the weekend about this. Works around Eagle Pass and has laid eyes on 20+ Mt Lions over the last 9 years. In addition to having helicopters/camera pilots track cats stalking him and his dog through the brush.
I’ve spent lots of time in areas I would say have big cats at any given time, and haven’t ever seen a cougar/mt lion. I have seen a handful of bobcats and one Lynx (in Alberta).

This mother mountain lion was just protecting her kittens and her actions were to scare him off. If she wanted to hurt him, he'd have been hurt or worse.
There's "stalking" where you are being considered a prey item and there's "stalking" where the mountain lion is following you out of curiosity. I'd wager most "stalks" fall under curiosity than predatory.
Seen plenty of sign in the '90s down in Big Bend. Almost always see (relatively) fresh sign when hunting here in AZ. Seen 9 confirmed mountain lions here and typically get 1-3 on trail cameras each year. Just need one to cooperate during the season.
I guarantee mountain lions have seen more hunters/hikers/campers than hunters/hikers/campers have seen mountain lion.
At the end of the day, if a mountain lion wants to kill you you'll know it is there by the crunching of your larynx or vertebrae.

We have lions in S Texas, seen a few just never had a rifle handy. Years ago, the first time I ever stopped at Freer and went inside the store (meat market), there were two Mountain Lions hanging in the cooler with a bunch of buck deer. Big ones too. Yeh, you'd have to be crazy to think they're not out there. LOL

I've only seen one, as a kid hunting with my dad in OK. We were walking out after he was bow hunting, came to the edge of the field, and he immediately made us sit down. We were able to watch the lion walk across the opposite side of the field. I play the memory over in my head like it's a TV reel.

The only ones I ever hear scream are Black Panthers. The reason you never see the black ones is cause they are only out at night and they are black. So you can't seem them.
Thanks, Billy

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Probably more than you think. At least if you've spent a lot of time in the brush of south or west texas. I've seen 2. The one last year was off limits because of landowner rules and the first I couldn't get on it quick enough to put on in him/her. I'd guess the number of lion attacks in Texas to be almost non-existent. Probably not more than a handful the last 20 years. I wear a .45 auto almost every time I step out of my truck or jeep when down south or out west. IMO, it is the smart thing to do with all the BS out there today. I'm more afraid of opening the door to a deer stand and having a nastiazz monkey staring me in the face then I am coming across a lion walking to my stand. Maybe I should take up fishing to since I'm such a scardy cat and carry.

I think that was a mother with cubs and she was just bluffing to protect her young. That's what I was thinking. If the cat wanted a meal, it would have tried to remain unseen until the attack, which comes swiftly to limit escapes, I'm assuming. I've been in E Texas all my life and never seen or heard one. Of course, when I'm down there in the woods I use a trick an old timer taught me. I rub scat all over myself and run around naked and cats don't seem to bother me. Keeps the neighbors away too. Cool video, thanks for posting.

Imo the best part of the whole video is when he called the cat a shyteface.
What a weiner.......google a picture of the guy, typical millennial who has no business being in the woods . Why in the hell would you reach for your phone and film that instead of making a better attempt to defend yourself? If that cat wanted his arse it would have had him.
I always carry a side arm when bowhunting or walking around in the woods out west....situations like these are a good reason why. I’m more concerned about bears than cats though

In the video, it looks like the first time he hits it with a rock, it runs away. Makes me think he should have started throwing rocks sooner.
I've been in the outdoors in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas for much of my life and have yet to see Cougar, but I know they are around.

I've only seen one and it was just a quick look over its shoulder before it disappeared into the brush. Been hunting TX all my life and I have to say that I'm much more concerned about walking up on a skunk while going to my blind than a cat. Quite frankly it just doesn't cross my mind that often. Gotta say though, if I got to worry about monkeys I'm out...

Got to readily and whole heartedly agree about the cell phone. That there is pure D idjit stuff. Can't say the same about some wiener having no place in the woods.
