Other than really large hogs, is buckshot (2 3/4, 00) effective on hogs inside 30 yards?

I’m interested in this as well, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while now.

It will kill his even big ones. I dropped a large boar in its tracks at 30 yards just aimed for head/neck

Do some pattern testing with different brands of 00 buckshot (If you can find any right now lol) and different chokes and you will find one that shoots really tight. The tighter the pattern, the longer the effective range. You could turn that 30 yard effective range into 40 or maybe even 50.
My shotguns prefer 000 Buckshot to 00 Buckshot, but the only way to know what your particular shotgun likes is to pattern test it. A shotgun not pattern tested is like a rifle not sighted in.

Other than really large hogs, is buckshot (2 3/4, 00) effective on hogs inside 30 yards? Very effective inside 30 yards (as long as you have taken the time to pattern several types to get the most dense pattern @ 30 yards.with your particular shottie) And, if you have screw-in chokes, try them all. It ain't fun, and you'll be glad when the pattern testing is complete and the chiropractor puts your shoulder back together and the dentist replaces your fillings; but you just gotta do it if you want to buck shot 'em. Put your bead on an eye or an ear and you'll take 'em down, generally with one shot from a 12 gauge. Here's my two favorite hog whackers: Hatsan DP-12

I found 50 rounds of RIO at Bud's and ordered it the other day. I'll start with the IC and the MOD chokes and see where that gets me as far as pattern.

That's an excellent start. Bench the shotgun first to find out what it likes when benched. Then do the same drill, but shoot off-hand to find out how it does when you pull the trigger and the shotgun is not resting on bags. There is sometimes a rather surprising difference in point of impact. Here's a few of the punishing and not-so-punishing rounds I've patterned over the last year: It's time consuming, expensive, and it hurts like hell, but as I said, if you don't go through the exercise to find out what patterns best for your particular shotgun/choke combination, you'll be in for some serious disappointment when it comes to your "shots per kill" ratio.

Federal Flight Control. I was curious and tried it. Patterned it and rolled a hog with it that night. Not a huge one, but at about 30 yards he was DRT and fell over like he'd been hit by a truck.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I have killed small-medium pigs at 20-30 yards with turkey shot during spring turkey season. If no turkeys come in, I am shooting the pigs. 00 buck has killed plenty of big pigs.

Have tested the Rio buckshot in both 20 and 12 gauge. It patterned better for me out of modified and it really could not be compared to the more expensive loadings from Federal or even Remington. Very soft shot and the tighter the choke the worst the patterns got.

The Rio Buckshot is just basic buckshot with no shotcup, buffer, or hardened/plated pellets to tighten patterns. You are totally dependent on the choke for pattern control.
Test it, see what it does with different chokes in your shotgun, use it if you can get decent patterns at the ranges you will be hunting, if not find better buckshot.

What LeonCarr says, X2. I've put down a bunch of piggies inside 30 yards with El Cheapo RIOs. Experiment with chokes until you find one that will give you good coverage on a paper plate at 30 yards.

Killed more with buckshot than rifle. Out to 50 yards.

Speaking of hogs with buckshot, I just executed 2 this morning with my Hatsan 12 gauge, using Olin Military OO Buck. They were right together and when I shot one, she went down immediately and her running mate started squalling and thrashing around, so I took her out of her misery with a second shot. Neither of these little piggies will be going to the market any more.

No experience, but a hog should be no problem. Back in the 60's read an article about hunting lions, 12 ga. buck shot was a preferred as a close range back up or going after a wounded one in the brush.

One of Boddington's africa hunting shows is a leopard hunting show. One of the hunters takes a leopard in the middle of a charge at just a few feet with a shotgun and shot. I imagine one of those could slit you up way worse than any feral hog could

I've thought of taking some buckshot in my backpack while turkey hunting, because I often encounter hogs during turkey season (and usually wind up wounding rather than killing them with #4 shot). However, I'm not sure that shooting 00 buck out of an extra full choke is a good idea.

I just ordered a pair of flush fit .695" chokes from Carlson's for a O/U shotgun. Carlson's is a wealth of information and they say you can run any lead shot size, including 00B, through a .695".
I don't trust these outfits that say 'full', 'extra full' and so on. You don't really know what the bore is. Carlson's shows bore diameter on all their chokes.
