Except for loaded ammo, I’m out of the 65 gr GKs. But, the 63 gr SMPs are enroute finally, per the USPS. I’ll have them soon. So, I’m wondering if the 63’s will group like the 65’s with the same load. Per Sierra, in a conversation years ago, those two bullet weights have the same bearing surface. And, being only 2 gr diff in weight, it seems reasonable to think they might print the same at 100 yards. I’ll find out for sure soon, but do any of you have any history with using both bullets?
I’ll probably do an abbreviated load work up anyway.
I mentioned that the AR was perfectly satisfied shooting the 223 bolt gun loads. I went out yesterday morning and fired one shot with the AR at 100 yards. That one cold bore shot, from a slightly fouled barrel, went absolutely perfectly centered into the 1” square. A more perfect shot would not be possible. Heck, if this AR continues to prove out this accurately, I might sell the bolt gun. Don’t need two 223’s.
So happy with the Seekins Precision barrel.

You banish that thought instantly, good sir. You offend my good taste with a statement like that. I have 3, if u count 5.56, and need about 3 more. I need at least 16" bolt gun with a threaded barrel, a sbr ar and a good replica of the original issue m16 (fixed stock, 20", pinned fsb, the whole bit in semi auto). Haha, seriously though I think it is one of THE great calibers on many levels, but especially if you reload. So if the idea is that there is no rifle caliber, let's say centerfire, worth "needing" multiple firearms of, then fine there's no real need. However, if there is only one centerfire cartridge that needs to have multiple rifles, then I submit the 223/556 is an excellent if not the best choice. I'm in the camp that needs more than one rifle for a certain specific calibers. In case u haven't noticed, i can be a huge fanboy of certain things. Because there are so many platform and barrel combinations (twist and length), it makes a single caliber so dang versatile; from target to varmint to light/medium game hunting. Btw, I'm just following. I have a 65gr gameking load I love and only about 60 bullets left.

Well, good luck finding more 65’s. I’m on a waiting list, but who knows when that’ll pay off. Not being able to get them was why I went for the 63’s. I used to use the 63’s in my 220, and I had a good stock of them but let one of the tennis kids talk me out of them. I was able to find some 63’s from Reloadingeverything.com on the West coast. They had a small stock of them, which is now depleted.
For the grandkids, I’m going to have to work up some plinking loads, but there will be no stinking plinking with the 65’s or the 63’s. But, thanks to a nice guy on the forum, I happen to have nearly a bazillion 40 gr Nosler BTs. I hope they’ll shoot in an 8 twist.

I hope the noslers work well for you.

You come across as a real life, died-in-the-wool .223 fan, so start saving your money and get Wylde! :-)

223 wylde, don't insult me!
I do love the caliber and more so since reloading. I've had my worst mistakes and therefore best learning moments with 223. Learned how to remove stuck cases with 223. Had some killer groups too. The woman can shoot like a 12-15 shot group under 1.0" at 100 with most under 0.75" with ammo costing about 35 cents including the brass. Tons of options for everything; brass, bullets, powder, etc. Before wylde, or the caliber for non-gun guys, I'm probably gonna do 223ai once I wear out the barrel on this tikka.

I have experience with both bullets & on deer from a .223. I'll state right off I'm not an advocate for the .223 as a deer caliber, just saying I've been there, done that. The 63 gr Sierra semi-pt (& the 50 gr Semi-pt version too) are the most forgiving bullets I've ever shot accuracy-wise. They group in .223 1-10" , .22-250 1-14". They are a VARMINT bullet & expand rapidly. The 65gr GK is a controlled expansion bullet & those that I have retrieved & that is several because they don't always exit, especially at distances over 100 yds, mushroom. I don't recommend the 63 gr for deer, so use the 65 gr if you must. The 65 gr shoots fantastic in my .223 with 1-10" but just so-so in my .22-250 with 1-14". The 63 gr bug-holes in both.

I always got excellent accuracy with the 63s in my 220. Regardless, neither bullet is intended for my use in deer hunting. I’ll use the 260 for that. The AR and 223 bolt gun are for pigs, coyotes and for plinking by the grandkids and me. That said, quite a few pigs were killed with that 63 gr bullet back in the 80’s when I loaned out the 220 to trusted friends that didn’t have a pig gun.
One of the reasons I wanted this AR, which I haven’t mentioned before, is that I can easily mount a red light on the M-Lok at the front of the rifle. The red light and the scope will let me shoot pigs in the front yard after dark. Outer range, as a guess, and with recharged batteries, is at least 150 yards.
