Good question. I have 3 elk tags for this year. A general elk, a 11-6 cow tag and a 6-6 cow tag. This is a general area so I had plans to fill my cow tag, 6-6, but when he got up and showed his wounds I filled my general tag.
General license is valid in any general elk area all over the state. Cow tags are area specific.

X2. Sure glad you found him when you did, hate to see an animal suffer.

Cow hunt this morning was a bust, no elk at all so I took a few pics of the property. You can see the Mullen Fire smoke hanging around again this morning.
Pics of the west pasture looking to the North, then pics of Long Draw in that same pasture.

Nice day! Doesn't seem right to be hunting in such pleasant weather.

Why do you have to be so negative?

I agree, we need moisture and some cool weather, but it's coming today. Hoping the smoke gets out of here and the fire crews get a handle on it.

Great bull
Congrats

And very glad to hear the meat was still good!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Went by the kill site and took a pic of his jaw, looks to have some age on him so we'll get the teeth aged at WG&F lab.
Tried some strap chops just to see if they need some aging, yes they do. He might make tons of burger but that's ok.
Good hanging weather moved in so by the weekend we'll get the verdict on steaks or not.

Stressed animals can hurt meat quality.

Yes sir, thankfully he was bedded and had been for a while.
Meat tastes fine but that chewiness needs to go away or it's burger for sure. He'll have 8-10 days hanging by the weekend.
Burger is great trade for walleye from a good friend. We ran out of last years burger months ago and had some great fresh walleye filets this weekend. Need to take care of the friend.
We'll be doing some grinding this weekend if I can find good suet.

Braised tenderloin for dinner tonight, should get tender after a few hours in the oven.

Had a tenderloin for dinner, not tough at all. Hoping the aged meat is close in texture. Grinding burger this weekend.

Wow! Beautiful country. Other than the water trough and a path, nothing man-made in sight. Warms one's heart and fuels one's wild spirit. Congrats on putting the elk out of it's misery. A very impressive looking bull.

There is a long gone, collapsed cabin along the creek bottom and an old salt shack up top, only structures on this end. Only access via atv or horse into the property but the highway is close.
This is in Tom Horn country actually. His cabin and the post office he used are a few miles away as the crow flies. Teepee rings up on rim of the draw too.

These elk herd up in Oct and the big bulls go off by themselves usually by mid month. Herds of cow and smaller bulls up to 200-250 head are not uncommon. They know where to go for sanctuary on a ranch that does not allow hunting. It can be feast or famine finding an elk once season opens.
