Plans were for a cow elk hunt yesterday. Happened across this wounded bull on the ranch. We have limited elk hunting access but wounded bulls get our attention and the option to put them down. We think hunting on the neighbors place wounded him. No way to know for sure but 2 bullet wounds in 1 front leg lead us to believe long shots were taken. We rode right up on him at 50yds and knew something wasn't right. When he got up the flailing front leg gave us the go ahead and take him. 75 yd shot and he piled up right away. Best part he was right by the atv trail we use to access the property, 5 miles in though. No infection yet in the wounds so hoping the meat is fine. His teeth have good wear so we'll get him aged by WG&F. Spouse thinks he'll score 325 " or so. My bets bull to date. Spouse's pic with the rack shows the Mullen Fire smoke we have been dealing with, the ranch is about 2 hrs from the fire. Say what you will about Polaris but our 570 hauled the elk and both of us out 5 miles or so without issue over 6 creeks crossings. It was a little hairy but we made it fine back to the truck.

Thankfully we put a coolbot in at the ranch cooler. He's hanging in there as it was upper 70's yesterday. Nice little breeze though had the quarters cooling on sage while we worked on him. They were cool to the touch when we started loading him on the atv. He was a little run down from the rut it looked like, not much fat on him at this point in the season. Should be good eating but I still want a cow for meat .
One little sticker point on that left front brow tine.

Always hate seeing wounded animals from people shooting way past their abilities. Once they’re hit, all bets are off, but you ought to be making solid first shots. Elk take a lot of killing sometimes!!

Cool morning but for us hot and dry afternoon. Jacket weather in am then upper 80's by mid day I took him about 8 am or so, we went up the drainage looking for a cow then back to him at 9 for quartering. Had him on the atv by 10. Put the quarters in the shade on a sage bush so the breeze would start cooling them before loading all up. Had him hanging in the cooler by 11 am.
Checked the cooler this morning and he is fine, holding at 40 degrees or so. We'll move him to our garage this weekend after the cold front comes in and let him age for several days. Nice weather change coming for us and the fire crews on the mountain. Our fall pattern of cold nights, cooler days and precip potential are supposed to move in Sunday.
Landowner comes in Thursday for his nephews deer hunt then we get rest of the season for deer hunting and winter trapping.

Nice bull! Looks like a BUNCH of good vittles there.
Hard to jump to conclusions with that shot. Could've just as easily been a 50y shot by someone who fell on their gun earlier in the morning.

I've fallen on my rifle before up there. Under estimated his score a bit, put a tape to him and we both come up with about 335 " and change.

Great story. Out of curiosity what are the actual rules/regs of taking the bull? Assuming you had a cow elk tag how does that translate to a bull? Do you have to keep proof of the injury/ use a special tag? Call a game warden? Not questioning the harvest, just interested in how the legal aspects work to make sure you are not in trouble.
