Mounting a Vortex Viper 2.5 - 10 x 44mm with a 30mm tube on a TC Pro Hunter. Have a T/C one piece 30mm high mount however the scope elevation has is bottomed out prior to getting down to zero. Still about 11" high. Mount is tight and installed properly (only goes one way) however having issues.

Any thoughts?

Had a similar issue with a vortex viper from about 10 years ago. I originally solved the issue with Burris Signature Z rings.

Later i moved the scope to a different rifle and couldn't use the burris rings on it. Ended up sending it off to vortex to have it checked out. They said there was absolutely nothing wrong with it/out of adjustment. The cleaned and inspected everything reassembled and sent it back. I put it in the exact same rings/gun and it zeroed right up with no issues.

They fixed/changed something, I don't know what. May be worth it to see, all I paid for was shipping, it has been working great for going on 2 years maybe now again.

Does the scope have a zero stop? If so, is it engaging?

No zero stop on this one. Scope range is good per spec as getting 7.5 complete rotations on the elevation knob. Going to try a new mount before sending the scope in for a checkup I guess.

Yep, first thing to check. If it's a Viper PST Gen 1 or 2 it will have a zero stop. If it's the Viper HS it won't.

Do you have another scope you can throw on there to eliminate the rings/mount as an issue?

It’s an HS and no others with a 30mm tube.

Shim the front ring or shim the mount at the front. Order the shims or shim kit from brownells or cut your own from an aluminum can or use your imagination with what you have on hand. Scope shims I got from Marlin for my lever gun where Polymer.

Also make sure the mount is not reversed, if that is even possible with that mount.

Try low ring. 30mm low ring is still high sometimes

Been through this several times with Vortex customer service:

1) Remove scope.
2) Take elevation all the way down. Count clicks up until you cannot move the turret (gently or you will break your scope). Divide by 4 to get actual potential elevation. Get mad that it is less than the published numbers.
3) Take windage all the way left. Count clicks right until you cannot move the turret (gently or your will break your scope). Divide by 4 to get actual potential windage. Get mad that it is less than the published numbers.
4) Place scope against mirror. Align crosshairs.
5) Ensure base is secure and torqued to spec.
6) Remount scope. Ensure rings are secure and torqued to Vortex's spec.
7) Attempt to zero rifle.
8) Get PO'd that you have even less usable elevation and windage than what you discovered while counting clicks.
9) Have multiple people install the scope and attempt to zero your rifle.
10) Crank the elevation to near maximum. Write the number down.
11) Contact Vortex and ship them the scope.
12) Vortex sends your scope back with their findings: the scope is perfect, it was installed by an incompetent individual, and it is your rifle's fault.
13) Look at scope and see where the elevation is.
14) Get mad as they did not test the scope. If they did, your elevation would be different than what it was when you sent it in.
15) Get a scope from a different manufacturer.
16) Have an incompetent individual (yourself) install a different manufacturer's scope on your flawed rifle.
17) Spend a few minutes zeroing your rifle.
18) Toss your "perfect" Vortex scope in the corner of the garage since you are too honest of person to pass that POS scope onto another individual.
19) Swear never again to buy another Vortex (at least anything other than a Razor).


In all seriousness, check your base as your may have it backwards (unsure if your base has any built-in elevation). If it was close, I'd say just bump up your zero distance (ex: going from 100 to 200 yards). If you have a similar sized scope laying around, try it out. You'll know very quickly if it is the scope or not.
