Hello,

I'm new and I wasn't able to find a way to search old threads in the forums. First, let me start with I've already paid Scott Huggins for an AMR membership. I've never been hunting, I don't have a mentor, and I am learning as I go. From some offhand comments it appears this is going to be a painful lesson. Could anyone post or PM me some details regarding what to look out for with this guy? I've already paid the membership, but should I even bother trying to go and hunt this season? If so, what pitfalls should I keep an eye out for?

Thank you in advance.

Unironically, things like this are part of the getting experience part. Of course you should go try to hunt this season. You aren't getting any younger.

I should clarify, should I bother trying to utilize the membership? Supposedly they have be on their schedule/reservation system and I already have the time off approved. However, I am not in the financial position to show up there and drop another huge chunk of money. Otherwise I am going to be scrambling to find somewhere for deer season.

20+ years ago i leased a property through him, I'm still on the same ranch but deal directly with the landowner. Have been for about 15 years.
I have no recent knowledge of his current dealings but he was a pretty solid guy back in the day.

Which / what type of membership did you buy?

Surely you didn't buy / send money without understanding what you get in return.

If you're really concerned or unsure contact AMR ask questions or request a refund.

So AMR now sells a few different membership levels that entitle you to a certain. Umber of days lodging and harvested animals. I bought a full membership. They have a fee schedule for additional services and guides. I have 4 days booked at one ranch around opening day. Should I just go and try to harvest what I'm entitled to without incurring a bunch of hidden charges? Is it even worth my time?

As a brand new hunter it seemed like a good idea. I have little knowledge of what to look for in a lease of my own or how to manage it. It seemed like a good idea. At the time. My instinct is to go and insist on getting my money's worth without spending a bunch more. I can be assertive when I need to be but I also get the feeling that the hunting world is a small one. What approach would yall recommend?

Also, if they hand me a bill with a bunch of add ins at the end of stay, what is my recourse? What is theres? I'm not trying to get away with anything and I won't agree to anything I cant afford and plan to pay for. I just dont want to be taken advantage of.

I would ask what you are allotted for the hunt and look at the fee schedule and make the best decision you can for your wallet. As stated above I’d take a little more time in the future when looking at getting on a lease or going with an outfitter for selected hunts. There’s plenty of info here and many ppl with experiences to share which can guide you. Best of luck, enjoy your hunt!

AMR has had about a half dozen different memberships for many years.
On their web site they are clear about what comes with each of the different memberships and what they consider extra's that you'll pay for on top of membership fee.

Seems easy to call them if you're confused or concerned, ask for a refund if you're uncomfortable.

" Upon your initial visit If you are not satisfied that this Membership is going to meet your needs. We offer a full refund of your membership."

Scott Huggins did have some leasing issues in the past and I was leary but a friend purchased an AMR membership 2 years ago and hunted 3 different TX ranches. I was invited to go with him as a guest. Huggins and his son were good hosts and I did not have any issue. Key is to understand the membership level and rules. My friend was never asked to pay any additional fee/charges on the hunts. Just made the reservations, obtain arrival instructions/directions and made hunts. Good luck and use it as a learning experience. However, I personally would not lease from him him and not sure I would do his AMR membership.

Thank you so much. You alleviated a lot of my concern. I will just make sure to go in prepared and with a thorough understanding of the deal, and I'll be sure to ask questions as I go. Thanks guys. I'm getting excited now.
