Looking forward to my first hunt this season...I am very new to this and looking to hunt in east Texas. My first trip I will not be going alone but I am looking forward to my own solo hunt as well. Any tips or useful knowledge for a newbie would great be appreciated!

Welcome to THF and to the world of hunting. You are going to have to give us a bit more information so that you can get relevant advice.

1. Are you hunting public / private property?
2. What species are you targeting?
3. Are you using feeders? Are you shooting from a ground or elevated blind? Or are you hunting by walk & stalk (still hunting)
4. Are you using rifle, shotgun, bow or crossbow?

I am sure you will get some good advice here on the Forum. Good luck with your first hunting season!

welcome

Practice, practice and more practice with your weapon of choice......you owe it to the animals you kill to make a quick clean kill.......they eat much better when you can do this as well......

For some of us caught in the suburbia, no hunt is a waste of time. Any day way from traffic with a gun is a winning day for me.

Good luck and enjoy. I started hunting as an adult and got hooked hard and now I also do a lot of recreational shooting.

Safety first!
Don't point that barrel at anything that you are not 110% sure of what the target is!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Have fun, don’t buy all the fancy colorful gear just yet. Pack for the weather, bring plenty of water and snacks in ziplock bags. Ask your guide as many questions as you can to pick their brain on your hunt with them. Watch YouTube videos for different ways to dress/gut your game. Plenty of videos also showing how to place your shot.

East Texas has some brute bucks, didn’t believe it till I saw some hunters post pics here and another hunting forum. Enjoy it and set some money aside cause you’re gonna get addicted!

Practice until your shoulder hurts, then practice some more.

When standing broadside, the top of the rear shoulder offers the greatest margin for error as an aim point. If the animal is not standing completely broadside to you, choose an aim point where the trajectory of the bullet will still pass through the heart and lung area. Shots from direct rear and front are to be avoided until the animal presents a more ethical shot.

It's not at all uncommon for deer to run some distance after being hit solid with a bullet. Pay close attention to where the deer runs so that you notice specific bushes or trees that it ran past during its exit. A thirty-minute wait before beginning your search is not too long. Some folks wait much longer. Once you start searching for the animal, if your unsuccessful search doesn't last for at least an hour, you haven't searched at all. And be sure to carry a good flashlight on evening hunts so you can search in the dark.

Find a video or two on YouTube on how to clean a deer. It's not so much that you need to clean one yourself, but demonstrating to others you've put forth the effort to learn what's most important about the sport, to provide meat for the dinner table.

There are no stupid questions when it comes to being a newcomer to the sport. If you have any doubts whatsoever, ask someone.

Good luck!
