It's big, rusty, heavy and thick. I found it on my ranch at a very old homestead. I was wondering if anyone could make me a butcher knife? I'll post some pics of it tomorrow.

Here's some pics of the old file. It may be too far gone but I don't know. What do you guys think, will it still make a knife? If so I need to talk to someone that could make me one.

Brand new American made files aren't that expensive.

Brand new American made files aren't that expensive. Understand, but found this one on my ranch at an old homestead. That's the only reason I'd like to have a knife made if possible.

That's a rusty bastard, lol. I did one out of buggy spring that was similarly rusty. I'd be willing to give it a try.

For those interested in making me a knife out of it, I would like a mesquite handle and leather sheath. I would really like some type of Bowie knife out of it but not sure it's big enough. Please PM me a ballpark price. Thanks

Do you know what kind of steel it is? Kinda risky getting a knife made out of an unknown material but I understand for sentimental reasons.

No idea about the steal, but it's got to be 70-100 years old due to the homestead and where I found it.

Very likely W2 steel. Water hardening but oil will work.

I think manufacturers started making files out of lesser steels, old files are okay. If you grind in down, etc. you might be surprised at how little you have to work. I'd just make a nice deer skinning blade out of it, plan on a half tang.

By the By Texas Knife makers Supply in Houston sells steel for making knives and they HEAT treat air quenchable steels for a nominal fee. I have always used them. You will spend a certain amount of time making a knife, for me having a known steel is the way to go.
