When he/she killed their first deer. As a followup to Texas Dan's poll, I think it would be interesting to see the difference. I know my boy killed his first deer at a way younger age than I did.
edit: this poll is in order to see the difference from when you killed your first deer to when your kids killed thiers. If you don't have kids, don't vote on this poll. Vote on Texas Dan's. I made the results of this poll viewable even by those that do not vote in it.

I killed one at 7 with a .243. I was a big kid. Next year I was shooting a .270. My son killed one at 8 or 9 (bad I can't remember?) with a .223. He is smaller than I was. But he very quickly graduated to a .270. No one ever held anyone's gun. But I was of course with him in the box blind and was very careful about gun handling, aiming, etc. We both shot many, many jackrabbits, raccoons etc with rimfires before ever shooting a centerfire.

My son, didn't kill his first deer until he was grown, (and my daughters don't hunt)19 as I recall. Afraid to say that most of their lives my kids were at the mercy of a custody agreement that gave their mother final say in any activity they were allowed to participate in. Therefore any thing I enjoyed, like hunting, fishing, camping, calf and steer roping, or just plain riding was off limits. Wxcept for the "camping" trips she took them on.

No kids.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

My ex tried to control the way I spent time with my son too. It took two separate court battles, and tens of thousands of dollars, but the judge ordered her to see the error of her ways by way of 21 separate injuctions against her.

Deer:
Oldest Son - 13 Oldest Daughter - 14 Youngest Son - 7 Youngest Daughter - I expect within a year or two she'll be ready, but that's up to her.

My son was either 7 or 8 when he killed a doe. My daughter never wanted to shoot a deer until she was 15 and then only wanted to shoot a Buck like her older brothers 10 point. She only had one evening and the next morning to hunt, that afternoon a huge main frame 10 that I passed on in the morning came out with 2 minutes left of legal shooting light, it was around 165 yards out on the edge of a Plum Thicket and she could not find it in the scope, next morning no shooters. Another time if she is interested again.

my son, ZK-315, killed his first deer, a doe, at 5 following an Aug. birthday. His first buck he still has a picture of that is dated, but I don't recall how old he was. I still remember the booner 10 that he missed shortly before shooting the little 8 that came looking at what the heck the ruckus was with me asking him why he tried a neck shot on the monster 10.

I have a situation with my grandson that I'm trying to just observe and stay the hell out of. He's 8 and has shot his little Rem model 6 that I gave him and my 10/22 a few times. He likes it, and his dad (son-in-law that's just 9 years younger than me, long story) wants to be hands-on, but, from what I see, wants his boy to do everything perfectly. And they both start getting tense. I'm pretty tightly wound, but holy crap, these two are something else! I had to point out, quietly, and peacefully, which isn't my usual style, that the boy just doesn't have the hand strength yet to [censored] the Rem 6 by himself. Organized sports is king in their family. I am not gonna push this little boy, who I love dearly, to instantly and totally embrace hunting. I feel that's a recipe for disaster. This next year, Grammy and Grampy are scheduling time at the ranch with just one grandchild at a time and no parents. Hopefully I can do some good (with all of them). I want him to kill his first buck, and I'd love for it to be just him and his dad, but A. I'm afraid what might happen, and B. His dad hasn't hunted all that much himself.
I've got a perfect Rem788 carbine in .243, that's HEAVY, that's perfect for a kid to shoot a deer out of a blind, but I've got a long road ahead of me.

My son killed his first hog, doe and buck when he was 6. We practiced a lot and he was very capable with a good rest. He is 8 now and has killed many a hog and a couple more deer. He has killed quite a few hogs at 200-225 yards. Boy has ice in his veins.
I didn’t kill my first deer till I was 27

My son was 7. Youth model single shot .223 with a fixed 4x leupold. At age 11 he graduated to a model 7 in 7-08. He was fortunate growing up and hunting with me in some exceptional locations, all low fence. He has shot 2-4 deer each year including some bruisers. He is 21 now, in his 4th year of college and thinks he has killed more deer than Jackie Bushman.

I was 17 when I shot a doe. I was 20 when I got my first buck. 32 when I got my first archery deer. My oldest son was just 5 (his fifth Birthday) when he shot his first deer, a doe, @ 80 yards with a open sighted 357 magnum lever action rifle. His younger brother didn't shoot a deer until he was 10 years old, with a crossbow.

Son shot his first deer when he was 6 with a Weatherby 243. Got a doe Sunday night during the extended season in January and then followed it up with a very nice buck the following morning. He's 14 now and I've lost count of the number of deer he's taken since that first doe. Daughter shot her first deer a year later when she was 9 using the same Weatherby 243. Scrappy little hill country buck. She's shot a few more deer since then, but she's not as into it as my son.
Thanks, Rich
