Haskell county. This took me about hour and a half, like last weekend. I had my doubts when I got here all the fields were plowed, but them dove like plowed fields too. I have had some of my best hunts on plowed fields, especially freshly plowed sunflowers!! You can have Argentina, give me west Texas!!

Flying solid right now in S Texas. I am off of my game big time right now & missed way more than I should have. I can blame it on the new gun, but it’s me. Killed my limit, but only recovered 11. This brush is THICK. No dog to help lol. Good times anyway.... Pond is full and things are getting quiet. After all that shooting, I used to sit here alone after everyone went back to camp to clean birds and eat. Sometimes right before or right after dark the pigs would come in to drink. I would sit in the bushes near the water and wait for them to come my way, then shoot them in the face at point blank range with birdshot. Talk about a pig never moving.

How'd the chomping go Guy? Well big improvement since we started working on it, but not much improvement over last weekend. She still tries to get away with some chomping, probably every other retrieve I have to correct her “hold/pop on snout”. But her overall dove retrieving is getting better, taking casts, marking, using her nose...prior to this season, she has not really done that much dove hunting, like 4 days. The weather was really nice, camping was awesome. Last weekend I tried to camp in the sunflower fields but the mosquitoes were so bad, I ended up leaving and sleeping at a truck stop, but this weekend was great. Sunday morning a lot slower than Saturday afternoon, like last week, shot 8.

I hunted dove just outside Grand Prairie yesterday near Joe Pool Lake and saw a lot more birds from 3pm until just before dark. We had a great time.

It depends on what you consider better. When it's hot I'd rather try to get my birds in the morning even if they aren't flying as well. If I don't get there, I'll hang by a pond so the dog can cool off.
Last weekend was nice and cool out there. Started Sun am at 52 degrees. Eventually got a limit, but the main problem was that they were all grouped up like December birds.
But as far as numbers go, I usually do see more in the afternoons. As a kid we never hunted mornings, but that may be cuz my old man had a few beers the night before.

Yeah I mean better for birds, other than that, I much prefer morning hunting, cool mornings, hot coffee, better for the dog etc...And dogs pick up bird scent much better in cooler weather. When it is hot, I make my dog sit and watch me retrieve a bird or 2, this took her some getting use to, but I think this has helped her to calm down, slow down... she gets too hyped up, which gets her over heated, ...then she gets more frustrated when she can't find a bird.... Slow down and chill is what dove hunting is all about.
