Hi everyone I am trying to learn as much as I can about hunting in Texas. I am moving to San Angelo around December timeframe and will be in Texas for 3 years. I would like to get as much of the Texas hunting experience as possible. I am really interested in hunting whitetails, hogs, and seeing about an Axis hunt while I am out there. I have done alot of hunting being from New Mexico and then living in Colorado the last 7 years. I have hunted tons of Elk, Muleys, Turkey, and of course all the other birds. I have heard that in Texas you need to really get permission because there is not much public. I was curious if this was the case? I am just getting into checking out the areas on Onx Maps and stuff before I get out there, but from what I have heard it seems like I am gonna have to find someone with land. Anyone willing to help me I would be happy to return the favor and help with any Elk knowledge or stuff if you would be interested in hunting Elk in Colorado at some point or if you were lucky to snag a tag in NM (I know NM isnt the kindest to out of staters for the draw.) Thank you

first off welcome to Texas and this forum.

Texas has awesome hunting of most every kind. Much land is private and you will most likely have to pay for access. There are season leases and you can also do a package hunt with an outfitter. Otherwise there is plenty of public land available to hunt - google it and you will find a number of places with public access.

Best of luck to you

Public land there can be crowded at times, especially weekends. Getting out during the week if possible is best, and get back in there as much as you can. There is also a good amount of fishing opportunities in that area that are really good. With all the rain last year, the lakes really filled up and will continue to get better.

Check out https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/public/ the states website and you can find out a lot of information on rules and regulations on specific swatch's of land that are public. I would advise next year to look into finding a place to lease land, just my two cents.
