Does a pen around a feeder seem to bother turkeys? Do they get over the pen and into the feeder area, or do they mostly stay outside pen? Thanks for any input, I appreciate it, & Good Huntin'

They will fly into the pen with no problem. I have seen a few that couldn't figure out how to get out once they were in. dumb birds

Somewhat depends on the size of the pen.

Turkey usually kind of run / hop to take flight, if they feel the pen is too small they won't go in it as consistently as if it was an adequate size.

If they struggle to get out it certainly will effect if they go back in.

Make it big enough and they won’t care.

I use to have turkeys at my feeder all the time. When I put a pen around the feeder, they stopped coming and I mean it was immediate. After 2 1/2 years, I am finally getting the turkey in the pen. Your results may vary.

I have large pens that are 10 panels to 15 panels in size. In the last 8.5 yrs I have gotten one pic of a turkey inside my pens and I have never seen one inside my pens. I must have the dumbest turkeys around. They roost in my neighbors and hit his feeders then come to my place and walk around the round pens a few times...then leave. I am glad the corn buzzards are dumb for now.

Thank you, men - for all the responses. I guess - here would be my problem: I am wanting to put a feeder out to draw more birds on to our small piece of property. I feel like I MUST enclose it, because our land is eat-up w/hogs. I need to keep the hogs out, as best I can, but still entice the turkeys to come eat. Any ideas from you fellas? Of course, other than - shoot the crap outta the hogs !! I appreciate any input, & Good Huntin'

How beneficial would a pig-pipe be, if I didn't enclose the feeder?

It wouldn't be beneficial at all. The pigs would eat the corn from the feeder and then go eat the corn from the pig pipe.

Build a really big pen that isn’t too high. Use hog panels and not cattle panels.

Large feed pens, use at least 14 panels arranged in a circle, 34" x 16' hog panels, T posts every 8' bigger pen is always better.
Overlap each panel one square tie together in 3-5 places, Tie panels to T posts in at least 3 places, bottom, middle, top.

For turkey, pens made in a loose / oblong rectangle work well also, 3 panels on narrow ends, 4 or more on long sides, bigger is always better.

I see birds in mine all the time. Doesn’t seem to affect their desire to get a bite of corn.

Turkeys have no problem flying or "hopping" over panels to get into a feeder pen. Give them some time, once they find the corn you wont be able to run them off.

I hate pens. When I got on the lease we had pens around all feeders. I think we have one out of 12 now. We exercise pig control.

Put you up a second feeder in the opposite direction or closer to the turkey roost for feeding them specifically. Fill it with mixed grain/scratch/cracked corn etc and set the timer to they will hit instead of your feeder inside the pen.

Build a table or platform of sorts where the turkeys can consume your feed without interference from the piggies.

Build you a lil' platform three feet high or so and put op a feeder like this on it. Give the birds just enuff room to move around on it and they will flock to it. Hogs can't get there.

I have one like this. Works great but you end up with some real fat coons.

Have your spinner set to high speed so it throws a bit outside of the pen. If your timer allows, only do this for the morning feed after the turkey come off roost. Personally I do my best not to draw them in, can always hunt them by the roost. Remember a post from a few years ago from someone wondering how the turkeys got into his pen lol.

I don't but I have a lot of pigs. I believe that it keeps the deer coming in early instead of going totally nocturnal. Just a theory lol
