For the guys that have a 12v thrower system on their feeders AND have checked V output, what should a 12v panel put out as far as volts? I have never checked and had one go bad...I had a 12v panel, about twice the size of the standard size you typically see on feeders, but when I checked output, it was between 23-24V...seems high.

See if it has an output rating. That does seem high for a 12 volt solar panel. Also check amperage if you really want to see output

That's about what I measure across the leads of the solar panel I use to keep my ATV battery fully charged. For what it's worth, mine measures about 12x14 inches and puts out about a half-amp of current in full sunlight.

Depending on size, anywhere between 13-17v.

It all depends on the panel, I’m a solar junkie so I’m pretty familiar with them. What size panel is it? I’m guessing it’s a 20 watt by your description but let me know and some of them put out that many volts and they require a charge controller. If it’s putting that voltage out your battery will be fried pretty quick. A small charge controller that size is only about $8.

For what it's worth, here's a photo of the output data that's on the back of the solar panel that I used to maintain a charge on the 12-volt battery in my RV. It gave me many years of dependable service before I finally sold the RV.

It's my understanding the voltage produced by a solar panel is much like the pressure behind the air in a balloon. While it may seem like a lot, it won't last unless you bleed it slowly.
