I've known guys that swear by improved cylinder chokes with #5 Federal Prairie Storm that's with 12 gauge though. They fly fast and most of the time will only fly up if they are disturbed very close to you or your dog if you're hunting with dogs . I would suggest an improved cylinder and a modified for your second for the ones that are farther out. I feel like the tighter chokes would tear the bird up more but everyone has their own opinion and style of hunting, I hope this helps.

I hunted North Dakota years ago when lead was still legal. Did fine with a o/u 20 gauged. Glad you asked.

I've killed lots of pheasants with an old Fox 12 ga SxS with fixed mod and full chokes. We had drivers and blockers. Try not to over think it. What you have in mind will work fine if you are a driver. It's a little different story if you are a blocker. Shot differences can vary greatly. I never blocked. They are tough birds with a thick set of feathers. Main thing is to hit them hard.

Opening weekend with a good hatch year with lots of young roosters, I would do IC/Mod. Most of the time in Kansas where you gotta work for the birds that dont have pierced beaks, I do Light Mod and Mod like our clown buddy does

Kansas pheasants with a SxS 20 GA I will start out with IC and Mod chokes in using high brass #6 lead or if non tox needed, #5 tungsten matrix or bismuth. I can change up or down from that depending on what the birds are doing, but more often than not I will stick with that combination.

Thanks Guys Appreciate the input-

Going to Elm Fork Tomorrow for a final tune & shoot some wobble :

will shoot the MOD /IM setup and see how it shoots - But they will not allow me to shoot #5 shot - only 7.5 or smaller

In Kansas I will start with a IC/Mod setup and carry the IM & a extra IC in my pocket

For pointed pheasant with a 20 guage.
If you are hunting Kansas in October it will be release birds. Season opens in November. IC/skeet with #7 1/2 shot and let them clear to avoid making pillows.

For wild birds Mod over IC with #5 shot. The modified choke will get you out to 40 yards. Wild pheasant flush straight up for 15-20 feet then level off and go. They are strong flyers but don’t have any juke and the manner in which they flush allow you plenty of time and make for easy wing shooting. Late season pressured birds get spooky and are apt to flush long and I go to either an IM or Full to stretch the top barrel out to 50 yards.
Good luck in Kansas.

It really depends on the time of year and the hunting conditions. I shoot ic/mod .28 7.5 early in the season, but I only shoot pointed birds
On driven shoots you are obviously going to a have to kick it up a bit. I've used a .20 mod/ full 6 shot late in the season when birds are no longer holding for dogs..

I've been on a few released pheasant hunts and had the same experience described above. My first day on my first hunt I had a helluva' time hitting anything because I was told to hold off on the shot for a solid 2-count to avoid making the aforementioned pillows. That night I figured out the delay gave my eye too much time to watch the bead and not the bird. The next day I delayed shouldering for a solid 1-1/2 to 2 count and did much better. I point shoot a shotgun, YMMV. Best of luck! Have fun and be safe!

I like Fiocchi Golden Pheasant loads in 20 gauge.
Number 5s, nickel plated copper - HARD shot with plenty of knockdown.

1250 fps, 1.25 oz. load.

this allows me to carry a Beretta White Wing O/U that weighs about 5 lbs.

all day long.

I pretty much shoot Light Mod for everything. For released birds 6's are good, anything from 1-1 1/4 ozw.

I shoot a Citori 20 every year in KS. I use IC on top and Mod on bottom. Never had any issues with the Mod reaching out if I fire my usual warning shot (miss) !
