We usually do both. somedays together some days apart, she is primarily a bow hunter. I plan on using a lever action .357. that's the plan for now.

Nice, I'll be hunting with a lever action as well, a .30-30 though. You guys actually live up in Fritch, TX like it says under your name? That's a long way to drive ... sure you guys don't want to hunt closer to home and leave little old Mcguire to me? LOL JK

Hey guys, reviving an old thread maybe.. I was drawn for Trinity River NWR - Boar's Den this year and was wondering if you guys had any updates from your hunts last year at Trinity. TIA

Love it. I wasnt interested in shooting any does and hogs are my favorite so I am very excited about this hunt.

Hell, if you want hogs, there is an abundance of them @ the Trinity River NWR....they're everywhere. I'd go as far as saying that I've never been to an area with more hogs, outside of a hog farm :P At Brierwood, take the right path - has some of the best open shooting areas and the hogs I seen over that way didn't even try to flee when seeing me...was walking down the trail once and a huge group of them were probably 20 yards in from the trail, they just looked up at me as if to say "WTF you doing in here" and just kept on eating. Fearless.

I will be there 11-21 to 11-29 for deer/hogs. I walked the trails a couple days ago and saw 4 hogs and 3 deer, 1 squirrel. Trails and signs everywhere. Looked like lots of hogs live in there for sure.

Hey that's me from the green screen. Like Binary said, the craziest thing about the place wasn't just the number of hogs, but how fearless the hogs were. They truly did not seem to care I was there.

I know if you shoot a deer you legally have to quarter it and retrieve the animal. But what about hogs? I assume eradication is what they desperately need by all of the reports about floor forest damage. Is retrieval legally required of hogs or can we donate to the save a coyote foundation.

I have been selected for the November 7-15 Brierwood hunt this year. I appreciate some of the insights you all have posted so far. Saw the maps on another post as well. That should be helpful. I live in San Antonio, and plan on driving over for the day to walk about the week prior. I am familiar with hunting hardwood bottoms (was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia), and am interested in what you personally used for those who hunted Brierwood before. Initial plan is to bring my AR (223) with 77 g HPBT and a climber. With the talk of plenty of swine on the NWR, seems like a no brainer. Also, I plan on finding a hotel. If you have any recommendations I would appreciate it.

Funny thing...I was selected last year for Brierwood, but couldn't make it due to work commitments (so, yeah, I am one of those guys mentioned earlier).

Looks like the city of Cleveland is your best bet for a hotel. Just 15 minutes up the road. From the reports it looks like it is going to be a good hog hunt. I think a tree climber wont be needed unless you are hunting deer. Then It is definitely a plus and most likely will be the key to a successful deer hunt.. I plan on stalking hogs and hunting fresh signs like wallows and rubs. Im not too interested in deer at all unless the legend of muy grande pops out and from reading the reports it doesnt look good. Ive read more reports of bigfoot sightings than I have heard of big buck sightings. If the reports of that many hogs are true then they probably have run off the deer. Good luck and I hope to see you out there. I will also be using my AR in 6.8 SPC. Im down to my last 45 120 Gr Hornady SST's but that should be sufficient for the hunt. I only plan on shooting about 30 to 40 hogs so Im good! LOL[Linked Image]

Gun Porn.

NX8 1-8, ARP 16 inch med heavy barrel, Improved NI BO BCG, Geiselle trigger and charging handle. I just got back from the range a few hours ago to make sure she was still dead on and ready for the hunt. And she is!

Thanks for the reply brother,
I gave them a call and it looks like I will be rolling over there for a day to scout (1 Nov). Took the week of the hunt off from work, and I plan on hunting 7-15...unless I get bored shooting hogs. I would like an opportunity at a deer, so the climber will be on standby in the truck. I'll be in the Silver Ford Raptor. Nice Gun Porn.

Does anyone know how we are supposed to actually tag a deer if we shoot one?

I have not received any tags in the mail. Or do we use the tags off of our license for these properties?

I dont plan on shooting any deer personally but I would like to know what to do in case a nice buck happens to step out in front of me and I do pull the trigger.

You have to use the tags you get with your hunting license - no additional tags come with the draw.
