Went out this evening to get in a last minute teal/dove hunt. We took some of the kids. Ages 4 to 8. So that contributed to some birds flaring.

Still had a few birds around but only shot three. Saw quite a few big ducks which was surprising.

Hunt ended up turning into a dove barn burner and most expensive dove hunt of my life shooting 3 inch steel....lol

Another interesting thing we saw were these hawks.

I assume migrating? Any idea on what they are?

Thats wild. I cant see the birds very well but there was a flash of reddish tan like a sharpshin or red tail.

Known as a kettle of hawks. Probably multiple species. They migrate on the thermals and what not. That's pretty cool to see for sure though.

One thing I noticed this weekend as I'm the only one dove hunting this sunflower field, is hawks are your freind, and keep the dove moving. They would glide/float over the sunflowers, like 20 yards high. I never saw the hawks swoop down on a dove on the ground, but I did see them consistently kick up dove in their path.

Yeah, it was very cool to see, video really didn't capture how many and how impressive it was.

Since posting this I did some research and learned this.

see them every year dove hunting in southern oklahoma. Ive seen over 50 of them sitting out in a cow pasture just resting. They do make the dove nervous around the water tanks. They come in low and fast . Once they move on it goes back to normal and see you more high flying dove.

See them in Woodson occasionally later in September like you did. Amazing to watch.

Hawks use to help us a lot when I hunted the south plains area, especially the smaller sparrow hawks/falcons.

Could always count on them kicking a few up.

Guy, that's an interesting observation that I've seen many times. There's a spot in Frisco off of 121 and Independence that I used to dove hunt over small patches of milo in a disced field surrounded by tall trees and a couple redtails would catch and kill dove on or above the ground across from where we were hunting. As soon a the hawk came swooping in dove would squirt out to get away from the hawk, more often than not in our direction across the field.

Should be broad-wing hawks migrating. I saw TPWD posted a similar video to this earlier today.

I saw what had to be 100+ hawks out here one year about this time. It was open farmland that was fenced, there was literally a hawk on every post of both fences for 1/2 mile or more plus randoms on the ground. Crazy to see
