I'm getting ready to broadcast my food plots this weekend. But no rain in sight for at least ten days or more.
So, can I wait until they come up to add fertilizer. And how much up...2-4-6 inches?
If so, how much? I normally add 150lbs of 13-13-13 per acre. Oats and peas.

Dry fertilizer you can apply anytime. If you want, wait to see if you're stand is what you want then, apply dry fertilizer

This. We've planted in September and top-dressed in March when we pulled off from grazing. You can add it any time.

yep, dry fertilizer can be applied before, during or after planting. We did all our plots near Fairfield last weekend, drug the seeds in, then put out fertilizer over the top. We knew there was a good chance of rain earlier this week.

oh yeah, we put out 13-13-13 equal bags of fertilizer to bags of oats and/or wheat per plot

I mix my dry fertilizer with my wheat seed, 90# each per acre and broadcast it. Then after it's spread I drag it with a drag harrow.

That's what I have always done in the past, but I was told that the fertilizer would burn the seed up if it did not get any rain in 14-21 days. That is why
I was thinking of adding it later.

stompy, yep, that's how we used to do it too ... but we only have a 50# road feeder on the back of my son's CanAm to spread the seed & fertilizer, why we did a two step process as of the past couple of years.

I sold my 3 point spreader to a friend (I tried to merely loan it to him when he needed it, but he was insistent on buying, and I could borrow when I needed it, but his ranch is 1.5 hours in the wrong direction).

I don't believe that's true. Been doing it for many years and never had an issue. A couple of times it's been 30+ days before it rained on it and it came up fine.

I'm doing 50 or so acres, I have Carbon Ag come out and spread mine, they charge $5.50 an acre to spread. Of course I'm buying the seed and fertilizer from them too.

yep, for something that big I wouldn't even attempt to do that much with a 50# road feeder!!! One place I used to have, I had about 20 acres in one plot that the 300# 3 point worked well, just time consuming. The ones we are doing now are likely about 1-1.5 acres each that are long and skinny along a tree line, 50-60' wide by 200-300 yards long, some smaller. We get pretty good coverage with 4-6 passes from the road feeder.

I do 400 pounds of time released lime 30 days prior to food plot to base the soil. Works for me and it is cheap. Will post a pic of my results this weekend when I go up to fill feeders

I have applied after planting with good results. Switched to organic range fertilizer this year and it won't burn regardless of when applied. Wont change ph as much as chem fertilizer either. Only negative is the smell. Initial results are looking good so far. Planted a couple of test plots early September. This in 2 1/2 weeks in with some rain. Turner Fall Deer Mix and 80lbs of Viatrec

Y’all that have close access to bulk chicken/poultry litter should really give some thought about switching over.

Adds more than NPK to soil, naturally slow release, actually builds / improves soil over time, can repair poor / low quality / damaged soils, cheap.

I agree, its in a state where all the nutrient get used. Chem fertilizer depends on proper ph to uptake the nutrients. $13 a bag and they have it in 1,000lb totes as well.

I do soil fertility research for a living and that's simply not true

The marketing makes me think snake oil. I got a chuckle reading their claims though

I learned this method from a farmer/rancher as a way to make the seed last longer when spreading it. The fertilizer acts as a filler of sorts so that you end up with a mixture that lasts longer in the spreader bucket.

I won't argue with someone that does soils analyzation for a living.

I did misspeak, when saying " bulk " poultry litter.
I've used composted and or processed chicken litter on several thousand acres, in 3 states.

The results of first, second & third year soil sample analyzation from one application were outstanding.

It does add more than NPK but so do synthetic fertilizers depending on the composition. It may add a little organic matter but there are plenty of management practices that do a more on soil health than chicken litter such as crop rotation. The damaged soil part is what I had the main issue with. That is a term like "natural" on something in a grocery store. It has no real meaning other than as a marketing strategy. Synthetic fertilizer is easier to apply, works very well, and doesn't harm the soil. There is a reason farmers use it instead of organic fertilizers unless they are farming organically. I know organic farmers that are very much onboard with the whole "soil health" principle. They no-till, crop rotate, cover crop, and some do have organic farms. On their non organic farms they still use synthetic fertilizers though.

Going back to this because I didn't read it that closely yesterday.

This is absolutely wrong. Chicken litter needs the proper pH and conditions to be converted to a plant available forms where as synthetic or "chem" fertilizer is already in the plant availble inorganic form.

Their claims are great though.
"Minimizes weed seed and harmful pathogens" If that was true every farmer on the planet would be buying this stuff roflmao It isn't going to minimize anything.

"Adds microbes" Yeah rolleyes Every snake oil crop product says that line

Yield and rootgrowth. Well it is fertilizer and they all do that.

C'mon guys, we're talking about feeding glorified goats for meat that few if any of us really need. Is it really necessary to get into a debate over fertilizer?

As someone who's job it is to work on the science of fertility I do not like to see misinformation being spread. Not a debate, just information.

If you want a debate though you are the last person on this forum who should try lecturing anyone about silly debates and discussions. Throw any flags in the trash lately?
