Yeah the hogs eating all the snakes caused them to stop rattling as a survival instinct is my guess. It’s definitely true.

I encounter rattlesnakes everyday. I don't believe hogs eating rattlesnakes has evolved the species to not rattle. Every time I pick a snake to train with, I try to find one that is rattling good. That snake may or may not rattle the next day. The ones I passed over yesterday could rattle really good the next day. They are temperamental as all get out. They are super super sensitive to over stimulation. Handling them, feeding them, being in the direct vicinity of them reduces their lifespan rapidly.

The rattle snake I stepped on and then shot in South Texas never rattled. It was in the mid 40s so that probably was the reason.

No matter how cold, it is scary to step on one when you are an hour and a half from the nearest hospital.

Five of us were cleaning birds by my barn for 15 minutes before noticing this guy 2 feet from my ankle. I never knew how fast I was!
