All summer, I've been reading about leases, how hard it is to find a good one, how expensive it is when you do, how far some people have to drive to get to it, etc., etc. I don't have just a basic comprehension, I have a full and complete understanding of how lucky and blessed I am.
My friend's father, who I have become good friends with, owns two ranches that total out at about a thousand acres. One is about 600 split by a highway and the other is 400. These two fellas and their family are wonderful people. I've had my feet under their dinner tables and spent many hours discussing whatever comes up over a cold beer.
I can hunt and trap coons (my first love), hunt and trap pigs, shoot doves, hunt deer and fish for bass and bluegills. All without it costing me anymore than a "Thank you, Sir."
I'm not writing this to brag, but to just say I realize what has been given me. And I don't take it for granted, either. After reading this forum all summer? I've been dropped in the deep end of the blessings pool!

good for you! Sounds like the way I was raised in central TX. Spent many hours hunting, fishing and BSing over coffee with a number of local ranchers that welcomed me on their property at any time.

Stuff like this doesn't make me jealous, it makes me happy to know that there are still these kinds of arrangements out there for some folks. This is how I grew up hunting, building relationships of trust and friendship, where the generosity of the land owner was reciprocated with respect for the land, responsible behavior, and making sure their freezers were just as stocked up as ours were. A bygone era, mostly, too many idiots out there blew it for the rest of us, and we live in a litigious society.
