I was coyote hunting unsuccessfully this afternoon, and I had the electronic caller out and working. Put it on fawn distress and a big coon came blasting out of the woods, apparently with supper on his mind. He went from 60 to zero in mid-pounce and shot back into the woods. I waited 30 seconds and played it again, and here came the coon again. And again he practically froze in mid-air.
So I guess coons are omnivores. I should look it up, as Bill is wont to suggest. But they don’t eat plastic.

They'll eat anything that doesn't eat them first; kinda like feral hogs. Kill every one of them you come across. . .

They are definitely omnivorous. They will absolutely decimate a pen of chickens.

I've been chasin', huntin' and trappin' them ring tailed bahstuds for many years. Coons are opportunists and will eat anything that's edible, including Aunt Joanie's horrible green bean casserole.
603, that big coon wasn't lookin' for supper on that fawn call. He was lookin' for a fight. There are numerous videos on Youtube of still hunters after coons actually getting attacked by big coons.

While they are functionally omnivores, like bears, they are classified as carnivores (Order Carnivora), and have similar teeth to bears (and humans for their cheek teeth) in that regard. The cheek teeth of raccoons actually resemble human teeth fairly well in size and the fact that they are low bunodont teeth. In short, their molars look like our molars which are general purpose (meet, vegetation) teeth.
Their generally slower gait, means that most of the meat they consume comes from 'slow game' such as that which is scavenged or from things like minnows, frogs, shrews, mice, bird eggs, various insects, crustaceans, etc. You won't see them running down an adult rabbit, but they might eat the baby bunnies.

Interesting, I always figured raccoons would eat pretty much anything. They seem to feast on the corn I put out, for certain. I watched a 'coon one night eating wild grapes in a tree for about two hours.
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

They for sure eat meat a couple years ago after duck hunts I'd clean them and then hang the carcasses around my deer feeder to see what came by and ate them. I did get coyotes, hawks, and bobcat pics but the vast majority were carried off by raccoons!

They'll eat anything that doesn't eat them first; kinda like feral hogs. Kill every one of them you come across. . . Yes, they will. When I have too many coons at feeders I will set out traps (live traps, Duke DP's, leg hold traps) whatever I have at the time. I have videos where squirrels and crows were caught in the leg hold traps in the daytime and coons came and found them that night. In one video the crow is already dead and the coon is trying to pull it free from the trap. In another video there are two coons. One has killed the squirrel in the trap and is trying to pull it free the other (same video) is in the process of trying to kill the squirrel. So yes, they will try to eat whatever they can.

They eat everything. They especially like cat food, but will also eat the cat. I would not of given him a pass.

Im a little baffled that someone could get to the point your at in life and not know that coons ate meat?
I have found a bird distress call works well for coons. Went calling with a budy a number of years ago and all we called in was 3 coons which were violently dispatched with a 7mm Weatherby. Only rifle i had access to at the time.
It's hell eatin em live

If you want to see something cool, play a coon in distress or coon fight sound on your varmint call. They will climb in the truck with you!

I agree. Possums and raccoons probably kill more chickens than anything else. If they get in your henhouse they will kill every single one of you don’t stop them in time.

Years ago my grandmother lived on a farm and in those days they collected feathers to use for feather pillows. She had a sack full of chicken feathers hanging on the back porch along with many other things. Her pet coon got in and opened the molasses bucket and started eating molasses, then smelled chicken. So it got into the sack of feathers thinking there was a chicken in there somewhere. Sticky coon in a sack of feathers was a sight that she laughed at for years.
