Gents, this is my white whale! I apologize for the crappy pictures. Here's the story and I'd love to get your take on it. Property is a 2,900 LF ranch in Round Mountain, TX, about halfway between Marble Falls and Johnson City on the west side of highway 281. I think we do a decent job of managing it for mature bucks, but there are (in my opinion) too many deer on the property. Long story, no need to rehash and we're not going to change the owner's mind on what we can shoot. Every year we take 7-8 mature bucks (mostly 5.5+, although we've shot some nice 4.5 year olds).

I first spotted this deer last season while checking a new feeder/blind setup we put up in an area of the ranch we don't hunt much. We thought he's broken his G2 right at the main beam so we gave him a pass even though he looked at least 5.5 and was the biggest bodied buck at the ranch. So my question to the group is, do you think the missing G2 is the result of a break, or did he just throw out this rounded nub? We don't have any kind of management plan for nutrition other than feeding corn 1/2 the year, so and it's not uncommon to see asymmetric racks/crab claws and other character traits.

We did not see the deer after the season started during shooting hours, but he kept showing up during the season, even late season. I don't know if he survived into this year, no pictures of him yet. I've obsessed with this deer and wondered the whole time if he had really broken a G2 way before the rut (maybe even in velvet), or he just grew the rack as such during 2019.

Curious to hear what you guys thing on age, both pictures are from early September of last year, prior to the rut.

Thanks in advance!

My bet is he broke it rubbing out or shortly thereafter. From the pick, given the diameter of the base and angle of the sides, it was there and then it was gone.

He broke it off and my guess is he broke it off in the late velvet stage. You need to post pics of the whole body to get a better age...his face and forehead in the top pic looks to be a 7yr old or older buck with a thick body and some loose skin.

Looks like he broke it to me.

No way to really age by these pics other than to say I'd bet he looks mature if not post mature from the one front view of him.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
