Did any of the older 308 savage long range hunters come stainless steel. From what i gather about 9 years old give or take. All the info i know on it.
The reason for asking is it has been painted. Can see where some paint has come off and its fairly shiny where it has. Tje guy doesn't know if its been sanded prior to painting and took bluing off or cant tell if its stainless either.

See if a magnet will stick to it.

There's plenty of stainless steels a magnet will stick to.

Look inside the action. Get it clean. Is it carbon steel or stainless?

The inside action and trigger guard look like carbon steel. I haven't purchased it yet. Only seen pics so its not in my hands to really look it over.

I was thinking it might be a fun winter time project if it was stainless under that paint. I have all the tools, buffer wheels ect

Magnet will stick to any stainless firearm. They are made from 400 series stainless, which is magnetic.

Would one of you smart fellers describe the difference in how carbon/stainless steel looks?

And thanks.

We used to use a copper sulphate solution to determine between standard steel and 400 series stainless. The solution will stain regular carbon steel, but will not stain stainless.

No idea where you could source copper sulphate now, as this was 20 years ago in a manufacturing plant. The raw bars of material were enough alike that it was difficult to sort by eye.

Considering how the barrel looks i believe its stainless. Now the trigger, trigger guard, and where the mag well is look different far as the surface. Not as smooth Its not really smooth like the barrel. Im not stupid and do know its different than the barrel material and probably carbon steel but not going to say it is untill I am 100% certain and I'm not even concerned about that part of the gun any way All i was getting at was to to see if the older savages came with the stainless barrel and if so is there any trick to see for sure.
And i will explain why i am concerned if its stainless..... Because if it is it will be easier to deal with for me rather than trying to blue it.
Do i know what stainless looks like. Yes but its hard to tell in pics from a phone.
The gun is on tgt. Look up projects in the search . Will be on the last page or next to last. Take a look. Its hard to tell and doesn't help that the guy doesn't know either
